Span: for shelves or tops longer than about 3 ft, choose 19 mm blockboard or add a support under 18 mm plywood. Load: for heavy counters and tables, go to 25 mm. Water: MR for dry rooms, BWP or Sainik 710 near sinks and in humid areas. Screws at edges: where hinges and fittings go into the edge, plywood is stronger, so many carpenters use plywood for carcasses and blockboard for shelves and tops. Check the core: the timber strips should be tight, with no gaps at the edge.
