A few simple checks at the counter — surface, core, adhesive and certification — tell you far more about a sheet's real quality than the price tag or brand name alone.

Check the Surface
A smooth, consistent face with minimal visible patches or knots indicates a higher face grade — important if the surface will stay visible.
Check the Core
Look at a cut edge for gaps or voids between layers, and check that the sheet uses an odd number of layers — 3, 5 or 7 — which balances internal stress better than an even count.
Check the Adhesive Grade
Ask which resin was used — urea-formaldehyde for MR grade, phenol-formaldehyde for BWR/BWP — and, if possible, look for a BWP sheet's 72-hour boiling water test rating.
Verify Brand & Certification
Look for the ISI mark and BIS licence number stamped on the edge, and buy from a dealer who can show this on request.
