MR vs BWR vs BWP Plywood — What the Grades Actually Mean

Three grades, one difference that matters: the glue. Here is what each adhesive withstands, which room each grade belongs in, and what they cost per square foot at our Lati Bazar counter.

Three Letters That Decide How Long Your Furniture Lasts

MR, BWR and BWP are not quality ratings and they are not brand names. They describe one thing only — the glue holding the plywood veneers together, and how that glue behaves when water reaches it.

Every sheet of plywood is built the same way: thin veneers of wood peeled from a log, stacked with the grain of each layer running at right angles to the one below it, then bonded under heat and pressure. The wood is broadly similar across grades. What separates an ₹38 sheet from a ₹110 sheet is the adhesive and the pressing cycle used to cure it.

Get the grade wrong in a dry bedroom and you have simply overpaid. Get it wrong under a kitchen sink and the plies delaminate, the shutter bloats at the bottom edge, and the carpenter has to rip out work you paid for. In Ahmedabad's climate — dry heat for most of the year, then heavy monsoon humidity from June — the failures show up in the second or third year, not the first.

This page explains what each grade actually is, which Indian standard governs it, where it belongs in a home, and what it costs at our counter in Lati Bazar.

What MR, BWR and BWP Actually Stand For

The three grades sit on a single scale of water resistance, from "survives humidity" to "survives being boiled". Here is what each one is made with and what it is built to withstand.

MR · IS 303

MR — Moisture Resistant

Bonded with urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin. This adhesive cures hard and holds firmly in dry conditions, and it shrugs off the ambient humidity of an Indian living room or bedroom — including a monsoon season, provided no liquid water reaches the sheet.

It is not designed for wet contact. UF resin slowly hydrolyses when soaked, which is why an MR sheet left standing in water will separate along the glue lines. MR plywood is also sold as "commercial plywood" or "interior grade" and is governed by IS 303.

Belongs in: wardrobes, beds, TV units, study tables, office furniture, false ceilings
BWR · IS 303

BWR — Boiling Water Resistant

Bonded with phenolic or melamine-fortified resin — a step up in chemistry from plain UF. The glue line resists water for far longer and tolerates repeated wetting and drying cycles without letting go. Still classified under IS 303 as an interior grade, but the upper end of it.

BWR is the sensible middle option: noticeably more water-tolerant than MR, noticeably cheaper than marine. It is the grade most Ahmedabad carpenters reach for in a utility area or a washbasin counter that gets splashed but never submerged.

Belongs in: kitchen cabinets away from the sink, utility rooms, washbasin counters, wardrobes on damp walls
BWP / Marine · IS 710

BWP — Boiling Water Proof (Marine)

Bonded with 100% phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin and cured under a longer, hotter press cycle. The glue line is chemically waterproof rather than merely water-tolerant, and the core veneers are required to be from approved hardwood species with tighter limits on gaps and overlaps.

BWP is tested by boiling sample pieces — 72 hours of continuous boiling under IS 710 — and the plies must not separate. It carries a different standard number to MR and BWR for exactly this reason. This is the grade for anywhere water is a routine visitor, not an accident.

Belongs in: kitchen sink units, bathroom vanities, semi-outdoor structures, anything below a water line

The stamp is what matters, not the colour. Some manufacturers dye BWP sheets or edge-mark them, but colour is a marketing choice and varies by brand. The reliable checks are the IS number pressed or printed on the sheet (IS 303 for MR and BWR, IS 710 for BWP), the manufacturer's name, and the batch marking. If a sheet carries no IS marking at all, treat the grade claim as unverified.

MR vs BWR vs BWP — Side by Side

Rates below are our current per-square-foot counter rates at Lati Bazar, quoted as a range from the thinnest to the thickest sheet we stock in that grade. Plywood is priced per sq ft; a standard sheet is 8 ft × 4 ft = 32 sq ft.

Grade Water Resistance Typical Use Price Range (₹/sq ft)
Commercial Handles ambient humidity only. No tolerance for liquid water. Dry-room furniture — wardrobe internals, beds, shelving, back panels ₹38 (6mm) – ₹65 (18mm)
MR Grade Resists humidity and brief surface damp. Fails if soaked. Bedroom and living-room furniture, office units, wardrobes, false ceilings ₹38 (6mm) – ₹74 (18mm)
BWR Grade Withstands repeated wetting and drying. Not for submersion. Kitchen cabinets away from the sink, utility areas, washbasin counters Call 8460783619 for current BWR rates
Marine / BWP Waterproof glue line. Passes the IS 710 boiling test. Sink units, bathroom vanities, wet areas, semi-exposed structures ₹44 (4mm) – ₹110 (18mm)

Rates are ex-godown and exclude GST. They move with the plywood market, so treat the table as a planning guide and call 8460783619 for the rate on the day you buy. Full thickness-by-thickness rates are on our plywood price list for Ahmedabad.

A note on BWR pricing

We stock BWR but do not publish a fixed thickness ladder for it, because BWR rates vary more by brand and batch than MR or BWP do. Tell us the thickness, the brand you prefer and the quantity on 8460783619 or WhatsApp, and we will quote the current rate rather than an out-of-date list price.

Which Grade for Which Room

The rule that saves money: match the grade to the wettest thing that will ever touch the sheet — not to the room's name on the floor plan.

  • 🛌

    Bedroom — Wardrobes, Beds, Dressers

Nothing wet ever reaches this furniture. The only moisture is the humidity in the air, which MR-grade glue handles for decades. Spending on BWP here buys you nothing you will ever notice.

USE: MR grade — 18mm for shutters and carcass, 6mm for back panels. See MR Grade Plywood.
  • 🍳

Kitchen — Sink Unit vs the Rest of the Run

Treat a kitchen as two zones. The cabinet under and beside the sink gets standing water from leaking traps, dripping crockery and wiped-down floors — that is BWP territory, no exceptions. The overhead units and the dry run of base cabinets away from the sink see steam and the occasional splash, which BWR handles comfortably at a lower cost.

USE: BWP under and around the sink; BWR for the rest of the run. See Marine / BWP Plywood.
  • 🚿

Bathroom — Vanity Units and Storage

An Indian bathroom is washed down, not wiped down. Water hits the floor, splashes the plinth and sits there. Ambient humidity stays high for hours after a shower. There is no sensible argument for MR or BWR in a bathroom — BWP is the minimum, and the plinth is better made in a non-timber material entirely.

USE: BWP throughout. Keep the lowest 100mm off the floor or use WPC/PVC board for the plinth.
  • 🧹

Utility Area, Washing Machine Alcove, Balcony Storage

These get repeated wetting and drying rather than sustained soaking — exactly the cycle BWR's phenolic-fortified glue is formulated for. A semi-covered balcony that catches monsoon spray is the one exception; push that to BWP.

USE: BWR normally. BWP if the spot catches rain.
  • 🏢

Shop Fit-Outs, Offices and Display Units

Commercial interiors are dry, air-conditioned and refitted more often than homes. Commercial or MR plywood is the sensible spend, with the budget put into the laminate and the hardware instead — that is what customers actually see and touch.

USE: Commercial or MR grade. See Commercial Plywood.
  • 🌬

Anything Semi-Outdoor — Gate Panels, Terrace Seating, Pergola Trim

Direct sun and direct rain are a different problem from indoor damp. Only a PF-bonded IS 710 sheet has any business here, and even then it needs a proper exterior finish and sealed edges. Untreated edges are where every outdoor plywood failure starts.

USE: BWP only, with all four edges sealed before installation.

How to Verify the Grade Before You Pay

Grade is invisible once a sheet is laminated and fitted. Five minutes of checking at the counter is worth more than any assurance afterwards.

1. Read the IS number, not the sales pitch

IS 710 is the standard for BWP / marine plywood. IS 303 covers MR and BWR. A genuine sheet carries the number, the manufacturer's name and a batch mark. "710 grade" written in marker pen on a bare sheet is not a marking — it is a claim.

2. Look at the edge for gaps and overlaps

Turn the sheet on its edge and sight down it. Core veneers should be tight and continuous with no visible voids. Gaps in the core are where moisture travels and where screws lose their bite, and they are far more common in cheap sheets sold as premium grades.

3. Do the boil test on an offcut if the job is critical

If a large BWP order matters, keep a small offcut, boil it for a few hours and let it dry. A genuine PF-bonded sheet comes out intact. An MR sheet passed off as marine will start to separate at the corners. Any honest dealer will let you do this — we will.

4. Check weight and density by hand

Two 18mm sheets of the same size should feel comparable. A sheet that feels distinctly light for its thickness usually has softwood or gap-filled core veneers, whatever the face looks like. Our guide on how to identify good quality plywood covers the full set of counter checks.

At Samta Plywood Centre — Lati Bazar, Ahmedabad

We have sold plywood from the same Gita Mandir shop since 1980 and we stock all three grades under one roof, so you can compare an MR sheet and a BWP sheet side by side before deciding. Tell us the room and we will tell you the grade — walk in Monday to Saturday, 10:00 am to 7:30 pm, or WhatsApp your requirement on 8460783619.

Where the Extra Money Actually Goes

At 18mm, MR is ₹74 per sq ft and BWP is ₹110 per sq ft — a difference of ₹36 per sq ft, or roughly ₹1,150 on a full 32 sq ft sheet. Here is how to think about that gap.

A modest modular kitchen might use six to eight sheets. Building the whole run in BWP instead of MR adds a few thousand rupees to a job that costs lakhs — and removes the single most common cause of kitchen furniture failure in Indian homes. Building the whole house in BWP, on the other hand, adds a great deal of money for no benefit in rooms that never get wet.

The efficient approach is zonal: BWP where water lives, BWR in the splash zones, MR everywhere else. Most carpenters in Ahmedabad quote this way already. If a quotation lists a single grade for the entire flat, ask why.

Plywood Grades — Questions We Get Asked at the Counter

For most of a modular kitchen, yes. BWR plywood is bonded with phenolic-fortified resin and copes well with the steam, splashes and wipe-downs that a kitchen produces day to day. The one place it is not enough is the sink unit — the cabinet under and immediately around the sink gets standing water from drips and leaks, and that needs BWP. Many Ahmedabad kitchens are built exactly this way: BWP around the sink, BWR for the remaining base and overhead units. Call 8460783619 for the current BWR rate in the thickness you need.
The name is historical. BWP stands for Boiling Water Proof and the grade was originally specified for marine and structural use, which is where the everyday name "marine plywood" comes from. In Indian homes the same IS 710 sheet is used for kitchens, bathrooms and semi-outdoor work, nowhere near water craft. What you are buying is the phenol-formaldehyde glue line and the approved hardwood core, not a boat-building product. Our marine plywood rates start at ₹44 per sq ft for 4mm and run to ₹110 per sq ft for 18mm.
Laminate delays the problem, it does not solve it. Water in a kitchen does not attack the face of the sheet — it travels in through cut edges, screw holes, hinge cutouts and the unlaminated underside of a shutter, then reaches the urea-formaldehyde glue line from the inside. Edge banding helps but never seals every hole in a fitted cabinet. If the budget is tight, use BWR for the run and put BWP only where the sink is, rather than laminating MR and hoping.
At our Lati Bazar counter, 18mm MR grade is ₹74 per sq ft and 18mm Marine/BWP is ₹110 per sq ft. On a standard 8 × 4 ft sheet of 32 sq ft that works out to roughly ₹2,368 against ₹3,520 — about ₹1,150 more per sheet for the waterproof grade. Rates are ex-godown, exclude GST and move with the market, so call 8460783619 for the rate on the day you buy.
Mostly more water resistance, but not only. IS 710 also imposes stricter requirements on the core — approved hardwood species, tighter limits on gaps and overlaps between veneers — so a genuine BWP sheet tends to be denser and to hold screws better than a comparable MR sheet. That said, strength in a finished piece of furniture depends far more on thickness, span and joinery than on the glue grade. Do not buy BWP for a long unsupported shelf; buy a thicker sheet or add a support.
