Plywood Guide · Furniture Thickness

What Plywood Thickness Is Right for Furniture?

The right plywood thickness depends on two things: how much weight a panel carries, and how far it spans without support. Get it right and furniture stays square and flat for decades; get it wrong and you get sagging shelves, loose hinges and bowed doors. Here is the thickness to use for every common piece of furniture, why 18 mm is the standard, and what each thickness costs in Ahmedabad.

How Far Can a Plywood Shelf Span?

Rule-of-thumb spans between supports, for shelves about 1–2 ft deep.

12 mm

Up to about 2–2.5 ft

Light loads: folded clothes, toiletries, decor. Add a support beyond this.

18 mm

Up to about 3 ft

Medium loads: kitchen vessels, files, most books. The everyday shelf.

25 mm blockboard

Up to about 4 ft

Heavy or long shelves: TV units, library walls, loft bases. See blockboard price.

A front edge strip or a batten under the back edge adds a lot of stiffness to any shelf. Blockboard types are compared in blockboard thickness.

Why 18 mm Is the Standard Furniture Thickness

Screw holding. Hinge and drawer-channel screws need depth to bite; 18 mm gives enough even near an edge. Stiffness. Stiffness rises sharply with thickness, so an 18 mm panel is several times stiffer than a 12 mm one of the same size. That is why tall shutters and long sides stay flat. Hardware fit. Concealed hinges, minifix connectors and drawer systems are designed around 16–19 mm boards. Availability. 18 mm is stocked in every grade and brand, so matching sheets are easy to find later.

When Thinner Plywood Makes Sense

Thinner boards cut weight and cost where there is no structural load: backs, drawer bottoms, loft shutters, ceiling and wall panelling. See thin plywood 4 mm to 9 mm. Using 18 mm everywhere adds weight to hinges and costs more without making the furniture better.

Thickness vs Grade

Thickness decides strength; grade decides how the board handles water. A thick MR board under a sink still swells, and a thin BWP back will not save a wardrobe with a weak 12 mm carcass. Choose both: the right thickness for the load, and the right grade for the room. See commercial vs marine plywood and MR vs BWR vs BWP.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard plywood thickness for furniture?

18 mm is the standard for the main body of furniture: wardrobe sides, kitchen carcasses, bed frames and desk tops. 12 mm is used for shelves and drawers, and 6 mm for backs.

Why is 18 mm plywood used for furniture?

It holds hinge and channel screws firmly, is much stiffer than 12 mm so panels stay flat, suits standard furniture hardware and is stocked in every grade.

Is 12 mm plywood strong enough for furniture?

For shelves up to about 2.5 ft, drawer sides and small units, yes. For load-bearing sides, tall shutters and bed frames, use 18 mm.

What thickness of plywood is used for a bed?

Use 18 mm for the bed frame, headboard and storage box sides, and 12 to 18 mm for the base platform depending on storage and mattress weight.

How far can an 18 mm plywood shelf span?

As a rule of thumb, about 3 ft between supports for normal loads. For longer or heavily loaded shelves, add a support or use 25 mm blockboard.

What thickness plywood is best for a table top?

For a dining table, use 18 mm doubled at the edges, or 25 mm board, so the top stays flat and feels solid. A study desk can use 18 mm.

What is the price of 18 mm plywood in Ahmedabad?

At Samta Plywood Centre, 18 mm plywood is ₹65 per sq ft in commercial, ₹74 in MR and ₹110 in marine BWP, ex-godown with GST extra.
