Plywood Thickness for Kitchen Cabinets and Shutters

Kitchen cabinets take more punishment than any other furniture: water under the sink, steam from the hob, heavy utensils and a stone counter on top. Getting the thickness right for each part is what keeps shutters aligned and base units square for years. This guide covers every part of a modular kitchen, with Ahmedabad prices.

Mistakes That Shorten a Kitchen's Life

12 mm carcass to save money. Hinges and drawer channels loosen within a year or two. 6 mm drawer bottoms under steel utensils sag and pop out of the groove. MR grade under the sink. Even with a good thickness, MR board swells from one leak. Unsealed edges. Water gets in at the cut edge, not the face, so edge-band every exposed edge. No sub-top under stone. Granite and quartz need an even 18–25 mm base to avoid cracks.

Shutter Thickness and Hinges

Soft-close concealed hinges are designed around 16–19 mm doors, so 16 or 18 mm shutters give the cleanest fit. Thinner shutters can crack around the hinge cup. Tall pantry shutters over 5 ft should be 18 mm, finished with laminate on both faces to stay straight. For door ideas, see plywood kitchen doors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness of plywood is best for kitchen cabinets?

Use 16 to 18 mm BWP plywood for the carcass and shutters, 18 to 19 mm for sink and hob base units under a stone counter, 12 mm for drawer sides, 9 mm for drawer bottoms and 6 to 9 mm for backs.

Is 12 mm plywood enough for kitchen cabinets?

12 mm is fine for drawer sides and light shelves, but not for the carcass or shutters. Hinges and drawer channels need 16 to 18 mm to stay tight.

What thickness should kitchen shutters be?

Kitchen shutters are usually 16 or 18 mm, which suits soft-close concealed hinges. Tall pantry shutters should be 18 mm.

Is 16 mm or 18 mm better for kitchen cabinets?

Both work with the right grade. 16 mm is common in factory-made modular kitchens; 18 mm is standard for carpenter-built kitchens and is slightly stronger for base units.

How many plywood sheets are needed for a kitchen?

A 10 ft straight kitchen with base and wall units needs roughly 12 sheets: about 8 of 18 mm, 2 of 12 mm and 2 of 9 mm. L and U shapes need more.

What is the plywood cost for a 10 ft kitchen in Ahmedabad?

At Samta Plywood rates, a 10 ft straight kitchen with BWP base units and MR wall units costs about ₹34,816 in plywood before GST. Laminate, hardware and labour are extra.

Which thickness is used for kitchen drawer bottoms?

Use 9 mm BWP plywood for kitchen drawer bottoms. 6 mm tends to sag under heavy utensils.
