How to Calculate Plywood Quantity by Hand
1. List every panel. Write the length and width of each part in feet: sides, top, bottom, shelves, shutters, back and drawer parts. 2. Group by thickness. Body and shutters are usually 18 mm, shelves 12 mm and backs 6 mm. 3. Add the area. Multiply length by width for each panel, then add them up for each thickness. 4. Add wastage. Add 10–15% for saw cuts and grain direction. 5. Divide by 32. One 8 × 4 ft sheet is 32 sq ft; round up to whole sheets.
Worked example: a 6 ft wide, 7 ft tall, 2 ft deep wardrobe needs about 108 sq ft of 18 mm (sides, top, bottom, one divider and shutters). With 12% wastage that is about 121 sq ft, or 4 sheets. Four shelves per section add about 48 sq ft of 12 mm (2 sheets), and the back is 42 sq ft of 6 mm (2 sheets). In MR grade, that is about ₹9,472 + ₹3,840 + ₹2,432 = ₹15,744 before GST.
Why Your Carpenter's Number May Differ
A carpenter plans cuts on real sheets, so grain direction, laminate matching, drawer designs and loft details can add a sheet or two. Offcuts from one unit are often used in another, which can save a sheet across a whole house. Use this calculator as a check, not a replacement for a proper cutting list. How many sheets of plywood do I need for a wardrobe?
A 6 ft wide, 7 ft tall, 2 ft deep wardrobe usually needs about 4 sheets of 18 mm, 2 sheets of 12 mm and 2 sheets of 6 mm plywood, with 12% cutting wastage. Lofts and drawers add more.
How do you calculate plywood quantity?
Add up the area of every panel in square feet for each thickness, add 10 to 15% for cutting wastage, then divide by 32 (the area of one 8 x 4 ft sheet) and round up.
How much wastage should I allow for plywood?
Allow 10 to 15%. Simple boxes with standard sizes waste less; designs with many small parts, grain matching or curves waste more.
How many sq ft is one sheet of plywood?
A standard 8 x 4 ft plywood sheet is 32 sq ft. An 8 x 3 ft sheet is 24 sq ft.
What does plywood for a wardrobe cost in Ahmedabad?
For a 6 x 7 ft wardrobe in MR grade, plywood alone is about ₹15,700 before GST at Samta Plywood rates. Laminate, hardware and labour are extra.

Which plywood thickness is used for shelves?
12 mm plywood suits shelves up to about 3 ft wide. For longer or heavily loaded shelves, use 18 mm or blockboard.
