Thin Plywood (4 mm to 9 mm): Uses, Grades and Price in Ahmedabad

Thin plywood does the quiet jobs in every piece of furniture: wardrobe backs, drawer bottoms, curved panels, ceilings and wall cladding. Choosing the wrong grade or thickness here is a common reason for sagging drawers and damp-stained backs. This guide covers 4, 6, 8 and 9 mm plywood, where each works, and what it costs at our Lati Bazar store.

4 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm and 9 mm Plywood Compared

4 mm

Bends and wraps

The most flexible thickness. Used for curved counters, rounded wardrobe ends, column wraps and lightweight cladding. Needs a frame behind it.

6 mm

The standard back panel

The go-to board for wardrobe and cabinet backs, drawer bottoms and the backing behind wall panelling. Light enough to handle, stiff enough to square a carcass.

8 mm

Stronger backs and bases

A step up for large wardrobe backs, drawer bottoms that carry weight and loft bases. Common in branded ranges such as Century Sainik.

9 mm

Light shelves and ceilings

Used for drawer sides, light shelves under 2 ft, false ceilings and wall panelling where you want a solid feel without 12 mm weight.

Best Uses for Thin Plywood

Wardrobe backs

6 mm MR, 8 mm for large units

Use MR or better against outer walls in the monsoon; marine if the wall shares a bathroom.

Kitchen cabinet backs

6–9 mm marine

Backs behind the sink and hob see steam and leaks, so match the carcass grade.

Drawer bottoms

6 mm, or 9 mm for heavy drawers

Deep kitchen drawers carrying utensils need 9 mm to avoid sagging.

Curved work

4 mm, layered

Bend two or three 4 mm sheets over a frame for round counters and arches.

False ceilings

6–9 mm

Light enough to hang, and takes laminate or veneer. See laminate for ceilings.

Wall panelling

6–9 mm over battens

A base for laminate or veneer feature walls. See wall laminates.

Which Grade to Choose in Thin Plywood

It is tempting to buy the cheapest thin board because nobody sees it. But backs and bases are often where damp first gets in, especially on outer walls and next to bathrooms. For dry bedrooms, 6 mm commercial or MR plywood is fine. For kitchens, bathrooms and walls that get monsoon seepage, use marine plywood for the thin parts too, so the whole unit ages evenly. Grade basics are in commercial vs marine plywood.

Thin Plywood vs Thin MDF and Hardboard

Thin MDF is smoother and cheaper for painted panels and CNC-cut jaali, but it does not like moisture and holds screws poorly at the edges. Hardboard is the budget backing option, best kept to dry, low-load uses. Plywood is stronger for its weight and handles humidity better. Compare options on our MDF board page.

Handling and Fitting Tips

Store thin sheets flat; they bow if leaned against a wall for days. Groove the back in rather than nailing it on the surface, which keeps the carcass square. Balance laminate on both faces of thin panels, or they will cup. Seal cut edges in wet areas. For thicker sizes and sheet dimensions, see the plywood sizes and thickness chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the price of 6 mm plywood in Ahmedabad?

At Samta Plywood Centre, 6 mm plywood is ₹38 per sq ft in commercial and MR grade and ₹56 in marine BWP, ex-godown with GST extra. That is about ₹1,216 and ₹1,792 per 8 x 4 ft sheet.

Which thin plywood is best for wardrobe backs?

6 mm MR plywood suits most wardrobe backs. Use 8 mm for very large wardrobes, and marine grade if the wardrobe stands against a wall shared with a bathroom.

Can 4 mm plywood be bent?

Yes. 4 mm is the most flexible plywood thickness and can be bent over a curved frame. For tight curves, layer two or three 4 mm sheets and glue them on the frame.

Is 9 mm plywood strong enough for shelves?

9 mm works for light shelves under about 2 ft wide. For books, utensils or longer spans, use 12 mm or 18 mm plywood.

What is the price of 4 mm marine plywood?

At our store, 4 mm marine BWP plywood is ₹44 per sq ft, about ₹1,408 per 8 x 4 ft sheet, ex-godown with GST extra.

Is thin plywood better than MDF for backs?

Plywood handles humidity better and is stronger for its weight, so it is the safer choice for backs on outer walls and in kitchens. MDF is fine for dry, painted panels.

Is 8 mm plywood available?

Yes, in branded ranges. At our store, Century Sainik MR 8 mm is ₹60 per sq ft and Century Sainik 710 8 mm is ₹65 per sq ft, GST extra.
