Plywood Guide · Buying Checks

How to Spot Fake or Substandard Plywood Before You Buy

Fake and downgraded plywood looks fine on delivery day. The trouble shows months later: bubbling laminate, swollen sink cabinets, sagging shelves and screws that will not hold. These ten checks take a few minutes at the shop and catch most bad boards before they reach your site.

10 Checks to Catch Fake Plywood

Check 1

Read the stamp

A genuine sheet carries the brand name, grade, IS code (IS:303 for MR, IS:710 for marine) and a batch or serial number, printed clearly on the face. Blurred, missing or hand-stamped marks are a red flag.

Check 2

Look at the edge

Count the layers. Good plywood shows even, tightly pressed plies with no gaps, overlaps or filler. An 18 mm board usually has 7 or more layers.

Check 3

Knock on the face

Tap across the sheet with your knuckles. A dull, hollow sound in patches means core gaps or voids under the face veneer.

Check 4

Feel the weight

Lift a corner. Marine and good MR boards feel dense. A light "18 mm" sheet often uses cheap poplar or eucalyptus core throughout.

Check 5

Measure the thickness

Use a vernier or tape at several points. A sheet sold as 18 mm that measures 16.5 mm is common in unbranded stock, and it changes hinge fitting and strength.

Check 6

Check flatness

Lay the sheet flat or sight along the edge. Warping, waves or twisted corners mean poor pressing or wet veneers.

Check 7

Inspect the face veneer

Look for cracks, patches, overlaps and loose spots on both faces. Lots of patching suggests low-grade face veneer.

Check 8

Compare the price

Genuine 18 mm BWP plywood in Ahmedabad costs around ₹110 per sq ft at our store. "Marine" offered far below the market rate is almost always downgraded.

Check 9

Ask for the bill

A proper GST bill should list brand, grade, thickness and quantity. It is your proof if the board fails and the basis for any brand warranty claim.

Check 10

Buy from an authorised dealer

Brands list their authorised dealers. Buying from one gives you genuine stock, batch traceability and a warranty the brand will honour.

A Simple Water Test for Marine Plywood

If you are unsure whether a sample is really BWP, ask for a small offcut. Boil it in water for a few hours, or soak it for a day. Genuine marine plywood keeps its layers bonded. MR or fake "marine" board starts to separate at the edges. This is the principle behind the IS:710 boiling-water test. Read more in IS:710 vs IS:303 plywood.

Why Cheap Plywood Costs More

Plywood is usually a small share of a furniture job. Labour, laminate, hardware and fittings cost more. Saving a few hundred rupees per sheet on an unbranded board can mean paying the whole carpentry bill again when a sink cabinet swells or a wardrobe shelf sags. On a kitchen of about 8 sheets of 18 mm, the gap between genuine marine plywood and a suspiciously cheap "marine" board may be a few thousand rupees. Replacing the kitchen costs many times that.

Grade Tricks to Watch For

MR sold as BWR or BWP is the most common trick. Commercial core with a good face hides a weak inside. Thin boards passed off as standard thickness save the seller money on every sheet. Learn the grades first in MR vs BWR vs BWP plywood (see also can plywood be waterproof and eco-friendly plywood) and commercial vs marine plywood. Also see whether branded plywood is worth it. Frequently Asked Questions

How can I identify original plywood?

Check for a clear brand stamp with grade, IS code and batch number, even plies at the edge with no gaps, correct thickness, a flat sheet and a GST bill that names the brand and grade. Buying from an authorised dealer is the safest route.

How do I know if plywood is really waterproof?

Look for the IS:710 (BWP / marine) mark. For a sample, boil or soak an offcut: genuine BWP plywood stays bonded, while MR board starts to delaminate at the edges.

Why is some plywood so cheap?

Cheap plywood usually has a lower grade than claimed, a weaker or gappy core, a thinner real thickness or no certification. The saving is small compared with the cost of redoing the furniture.

How many layers should 18 mm plywood have?

Good 18 mm plywood usually has 7 or more evenly pressed layers. Fewer, thicker or uneven layers with gaps point to a weaker core.

Does branded plywood come with a warranty?

Most major brands offer a warranty on their plywood, which depends on the product. It is honoured through authorised dealers, so keep the GST bill that names the brand and grade.

What is the price of genuine marine plywood in Ahmedabad?

At Samta Plywood Centre, 18 mm marine BWP plywood is ₹110 per sq ft, about ₹3,520 per 8x4 ft sheet, ex-godown with GST extra. Branded rates are on our plywood price list.

Can I check plywood thickness myself?

Yes. Measure at several points on the sheet edge with a vernier caliper or a good tape. A genuine board should be within about half a millimetre of its stated thickness.
