Plywood Grade · BWR
BWR Plywood
BWR plywood sits between MR and marine BWP: it survives repeated wetting and drying at a lower price than marine plywood. Here is what the grade means, how it compares, where it is enough in a kitchen, and how to make sure you are getting it.
What BWR Plywood Means
BWR stands for Boiling Water Resistant. It is a grade of plywood bonded with a phenolic-fortified resin, a glue designed to survive repeated wetting and drying without the layers separating. In India, MR and BWR grades are covered by IS 303, while fully waterproof marine / BWP plywood falls under IS 710.
That puts BWR right in the middle of the ladder. It is noticeably more water-tolerant than MR, which only handles humidity, and noticeably cheaper than marine BWP, which is built for constant wetting. For many Ahmedabad kitchens it is the sensible grade for everything except the sink zone.

A note on BWR pricing: we stock BWR but do not publish a fixed thickness ladder, because BWR rates vary more by brand and batch than MR or BWP do. Tell us the thickness, brand and quantity on 8460783619 and we will quote the current rate. The full grade guide is in MR vs BWR vs BWP.
Where BWR Is Enough, and Where It Isn't
BWR is right
Kitchen run away from the sink
Base units by the hob, wall units and tall units see steam and splashes, not standing water.
BWR is right
Utility areas and wash counters
Repeated wiping and the occasional spill. Seal every edge.
BWR is right
Humid-wall wardrobes
Wardrobes on outer walls that get damp in the monsoon, or ground-floor rooms.
Use BWP instead
Bathrooms
BWP is the minimum for vanities; plinths are better in PVC or WPC. Plywood for bathroom vanity.
MR is enough
Dry bedrooms and living rooms

The Zonal Kitchen: BWP Where Water Lives, BWR Elsewhere
Many Ahmedabad kitchens are built this way: BWP for the sink base unit, BWR for the rest of the base run and the wall units, and 1 mm laminate outside with inner laminate inside. It keeps the water-critical cabinet fully waterproof without paying marine rates for the whole kitchen. If the budget is tight, it is far better to use BWR for the run with BWP only at the sink than to laminate MR and hope.
Whatever the grade, the kitchen also needs edge banding on every edge, laminate on both faces of every panel, and a plinth that keeps the carcass off a wet floor. Costs by layout are in kitchen cabinet cost, and grade choice for kitchens in which plywood is best for a modular kitchen.
How to identify genuine BWR plywood

Check the face of the sheet for four things, as in the photo: the IS 303 standard number, the ISI mark, a CM/L licence number printed with it, and the grade written as BWR. The manufacturer's name should be on the sheet too, usually along the edge. You can look up a CM/L number on the BIS Care app to see whom the licence belongs to. If a sheet has no IS marking, treat the grade claim as unverified. A home test can't replace the marking, but BWR glue should not soften or let the layers separate after soaking and drying a small offcut. Frequently Asked Questions
What is BWR plywood?
Boiling Water Resistant plywood: an IS 303 grade bonded with phenolic-fortified resin that withstands repeated wetting and drying, between MR and marine BWP grades.
Is BWR plywood waterproof?
It is water-resistant, not waterproof. It handles splashes, steam and repeated wetting, but for sustained wetting such as under a sink or in a bathroom, use BWP / marine plywood (IS 710).
