Plywood for Bathroom Vanity

The bathroom vanity is the single most demanding cabinet in the house for moisture — here's which grade actually survives it, explained by Ahmedabad's plywood dealer since 1980.

Why the Vanity Is Worse Than the Rest of the Bathroom

Every part of a bathroom is humid, but the vanity cabinet sits in the single worst spot in the room — directly under a wash basin that gets splashed multiple times a day, often with standing water pooling at the counter edge before it drains. Unlike a kitchen cabinet that sees occasional splashes, a vanity carcass can face near-constant low-level moisture at its top edge. This is not a place to compromise on grade.

We see more plywood failures in bathroom vanities than in any other single application — almost always because MR grade was used to save a small amount, or because the cut edges were never sealed. A vanity is one of the few places where we tell customers not to try to save money on the board itself.

What a Vanity Cabinet Actually Faces

Four specific exposure points make a vanity harder on plywood than almost any other cabinet in the home.

Constant Splash at the Top Edge

The top of the vanity carcass, directly under the basin cutout, absorbs water every time the tap runs. This is a near-continuous exposure point, not an occasional one — which is exactly what BWP grade is engineered to withstand.

Bathrooms trap steam and humidity far more than kitchens, especially with hot water use. Even the parts of the vanity that never get directly splashed still sit in continuously humid air.

Poor Ventilation in Many Indian Bathrooms

Many bathrooms in Ahmedabad homes have limited ventilation, meaning moisture lingers in the air for hours after a shower rather than clearing quickly. This extends the vanity's exposure time well beyond the few minutes the tap is actually running.

Cut Edges Left Unsealed

Every cut edge of a plywood panel is more porous than its laminated face. If these edges — especially around the basin cutout — aren't sealed properly, water finds its way in regardless of how good the grade is.

💡 Always ask your carpenter to seal every cut edge, not just the visible outer edges of the vanity.

Which Grade — or Material — to Use

Unlike a bedroom wardrobe, there isn't really a "budget" grade option for a vanity that we'd recommend.

Marine (BWP) Grade Plywood — The Standard Choice

Marine grade (Boiling Water Proof) plywood is the only plywood grade we recommend for a vanity carcass. It uses phenol-formaldehyde resin that withstands continuous moisture without delaminating — exactly the demand a vanity places on it.

WPC Board — A Fully Waterproof Alternative

For vanities that sit especially close to the shower area, or at floor level where standing water risk is higher, WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) board is worth considering. Being plastic-based, it never absorbs moisture at all, even at a cut edge. Marine plywood still holds screws and heavy hardware slightly better, so many carpenters use marine plywood for the structural carcass and WPC for shutters or skirting closest to the floor.

What Not to Use

Commercial Grade and MR Grade plywood are not suitable for a vanity carcass under any circumstances — both will absorb moisture at the top edge within months and begin to delaminate. If budget is a genuine constraint, it is better to reduce the vanity's size or design complexity than to downgrade the grade.

Thickness and Edge Sealing

Grade alone isn't enough — thickness and how the edges are finished decide how long the vanity actually lasts.

18mm: Vanity Carcass

The sides, base and back panel supporting the basin countertop should use 18mm marine plywood for adequate rigidity under the weight of the counter and basin.

12mm – 16mm: Shutters & Drawer Fronts

Vanity shutters and drawer fronts typically use 12mm to 16mm plywood — enough to stay flat in a humid environment without adding unnecessary weight to the hinges.

Sealing Every Cut Edge

PVC edge banding, silicone sealant at joints, or at minimum two coats of waterproof sealer should be applied to every cut edge before the laminate finish goes on — particularly around the basin cutout and where the carcass meets the wall or floor.

Both are suitable for bathroom vanities — the right one depends on how close the vanity sits to direct water contact.

Warning Signs of Failing Vanity Plywood

Catching these early lets you fix a small problem before it becomes a full cabinet replacement.

Swelling or Bubbling at the Top Edge

A slightly raised or uneven strip along the top edge under the basin is usually the first visible sign of moisture getting into the panel — often before any smell or softness develops.

Soft or Spongy Feel When Pressed

Press firmly on the carcass near the basin cutout and along the base. Any give or sponginess means moisture has already reached the inner layers, and the affected section needs attention before it spreads further.

A Musty Smell From Inside the Cabinet

A persistent musty odour when you open the vanity doors — even after cleaning — usually indicates trapped moisture inside the carcass, sometimes before any visible damage appears.

Peeling Laminate at the Edges

Laminate lifting at a corner or edge lets water in behind the surface layer, accelerating damage to the plywood underneath even if the rest of the laminate looks fine.

Maintenance Tips to Extend Vanity Life

Wipe down after every use where possible, especially standing water at the basin edge. Keep the exhaust fan or window open for at least 15–20 minutes after a hot shower to clear humidity faster. Re-seal joints annually — silicone sealant around the basin and at the top edge degrades over time and should be checked once a year. Address any of the warning signs above immediately rather than waiting, since moisture damage in plywood spreads faster than it seems to from the outside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Marine grade (BWP — Boiling Water Proof) plywood is the only plywood grade recommended for a bathroom vanity. A vanity sits directly below a wash basin with constant splash exposure and high ambient humidity, which is more demanding than a kitchen cabinet. Never use Commercial or MR grade plywood for a vanity carcass.
WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) board is fully waterproof by composition and never absorbs moisture, which makes it an excellent alternative for a bathroom vanity carcass, especially in vanities that sit very close to the shower area or floor level. Marine plywood is still an excellent choice and offers slightly better screw-holding for heavy hardware; both are used successfully in Ahmedabad bathrooms.
