Laminates for Bathrooms: Where They Work and Where They Don't

Laminate can look excellent in a bathroom, as long as you put it in the right places and build it properly. The laminate face handles splashes well. What fails is the board behind it and the unsealed edges. Get those right and a laminate vanity will last for years.

Five Rules for a Laminate Vanity That Lasts

01 · Board

BWP / marine plywood only

MR or commercial plywood swells in bathroom humidity. Use BWP or marine grade. See marine plywood for bathrooms.

02 · Both faces

Laminate front and back

Cover every face, including the back of shutters and the inside of the carcass, so moisture has no way in. Inner laminate is enough for the hidden faces.

03 · Edges

Seal every edge and cut-out

Edge-band all sides and seal the basin and pipe cut-outs with silicone. Unsealed edges are where water damage starts. See edge banding.

04 · Off the floor

Raise or wall-hang it

A wall-hung vanity, or one on legs or a plinth, keeps the board clear of floor water from mopping.

05 · Hardware

Stainless steel fittings

Use SS hinges, channels and handles. Rusting hardware stains laminate and loosens.

Best Laminate Finishes for Bathrooms

Matte & textured

They hide water spots, soap marks and fingerprints best. They are the most practical choice for a daily-use vanity.

Gloss

Looks bright in a small bathroom, but water spots and streaks show. It is best on a mirror cabinet rather than the vanity.

Anti-bacterial

Treated surfaces that limit bacterial growth, worth considering for shared and commercial washrooms.

Stone & woodgrain

Marble-look laminates match stone tops. Warm woodgrains soften an all-tile bathroom.

Compare finishes in matte vs gloss vs textured laminate.

Care and Ventilation

Wipe splashes dry instead of letting them sit, especially along the top edge of the vanity. Use mild soap and a soft cloth. Acidic tile cleaners and bleach can dull the laminate surface. Run the exhaust fan during and after showers. Constant steam is the slow enemy of any bathroom furniture. If you ever see mould at an edge, deal with it early. Our guide to preventing mould on plywood explains how.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can laminate be used in a bathroom?

Yes, on vanity units, mirror cabinets and storage outside the shower zone, as long as the board is BWP or marine plywood and every edge and cut-out is sealed. Shower walls and wet zones should be tiled.

Which plywood is best for a laminate bathroom vanity?

BWP or marine grade plywood. MR and commercial plywood swell in bathroom humidity even when laminated.

Which laminate finish is best for a bathroom?

Matte and textured finishes are the most practical because they hide water spots and soap marks. Gloss suits mirror cabinets better than the vanity itself.

What is used for bathroom partitions in offices and malls?

Compact laminate is the usual choice. It is a solid, self-supporting laminate panel that resists water and does not need a board behind it.

How do I stop a laminate vanity from getting water damage?

Use BWP plywood, laminate every face, edge-band and silicone-seal all edges and cut-outs, keep the unit off the floor, wipe splashes dry and keep the bathroom ventilated.

How long does a laminate bathroom vanity last?

Built on BWP plywood with laminate on every face and all edges sealed, a laminate vanity typically lasts many years. Most failures start at an unsealed edge or a basin cut-out.

Can I use compact laminate for a bathroom vanity top?

Yes. Compact laminate is solid and self-supporting, so it handles standing water on a vanity top better than 1 mm laminate on plywood.
