Laminate vs Tiles for Walls & Kitchens: Which Is Better?

Tiles and laminate often compete for the same wall: behind the TV, around the kitchen, in the bathroom. Neither wins everywhere. Tiles are unbeatable where there is water and heat, while laminate wins on warmth, speed and design in dry areas. This guide shows where each belongs.

A Quick Note on Floors

This guide is about walls, backsplashes and counters. "Laminate flooring" is a different product, a thick click-lock plank, and is not the same as the decorative laminate sheets used on furniture and walls. In Gujarat's climate, most homes use vitrified tiles on floors. The rest of this page compares decorative laminate with wall tiles.

Which One Where?

Behind the hob

Tiles or glass

Direct heat and oil splatter make tiles, glass or stone the safe choice right behind the stove. Laminate here can discolour or lift.

Rest of the kitchen backsplash

Either, carefully

Away from the hob, a laminate backsplash that matches the shutters looks seamless. Seal every joint and use a water-resistant board. See the kitchen laminate guide.

Bathroom walls & shower

Tiles

Constant water and steam make tiles the right answer. Laminate works only on vanity units, on BWP plywood, away from the shower. See laminates for bathrooms.

TV wall & bedroom headboard

Laminate

Dry areas where you want warmth, texture and hidden wiring. Laminate or fluted panels on a plywood frame beat tiles here. See plywood for wall panelling. Considering wallpaper instead? See wall laminate vs wallpaper.

Pooja unit

Laminate or both

Marble-look laminate on the unit, with a tile or stone base where diyas and water are placed.

Kitchen counter

Stone, or compact laminate

Granite and quartz are the norm on counters. Regular 1 mm laminate is not meant for a cutting and cooking surface; compact laminate is the laminate option.

Cost: What to Compare

Comparing the tile price per box with the laminate price per sheet is misleading. For laminate, add the backing board (plywood or MDF), adhesive, edge finishing and carpenter labour. For tiles, add adhesive or mortar, grout, the tiler's labour, breakage and any wall chasing for wiring. A 1 mm laminate sheet costs roughly ₹35–55 per sq ft for material alone. A backing board, such as 12 mm plywood, adds to that. On a plain wall, basic tiles usually work out cheaper. On a feature wall with lighting and hidden wiring, laminate panelling is often competitive.

Getting Laminate Walls Right

Fix the backing board on a frame, not directly on a damp wall. Leave a small air gap, and fix any seepage before panelling. Use a balancing sheet on the back of large panels, and edge-band exposed sides. Sheet sizes and counts are in the laminate size guide, and finish choice in matte vs gloss vs textured.

At our Lati Bazar store we stock the laminates and the plywood or MDF backing together, so you can buy one matching set. Brand ranges are on our laminate dealer page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laminate better than tiles for walls?

For dry feature walls such as TV walls and headboards, laminate is often better because it is warmer, faster to fit and hides wiring. For bathrooms and behind the stove, tiles are better because they handle water and heat.

Can I use laminate for a kitchen backsplash?

Yes, away from the hob, as long as the joints are sealed and the backing board is water-resistant. Directly behind the stove, tiles, glass or stone are safer.

Can laminate be used in bathrooms?

Use laminate only on vanity units and cabinets made of BWP plywood, away from direct water. Shower and wet walls should be tiled.

Which is cheaper, laminate or tiles?

On a plain wall, basic tiles are usually cheaper. On a feature wall where you want lighting, hidden wiring or a wood look, laminate panelling on plywood is often competitive once tiling labour and wall chasing are counted.

Is laminate the same as laminate flooring?

No. Decorative laminate is a thin sheet glued to furniture and wall panels. Laminate flooring is a thick click-lock plank made for floors.
