Laminate vs Paint: Which Is Better for Furniture & Walls?

For furniture, the real choice is between laminate and a painted finish such as PU or duco. For walls, it is wall laminate versus emulsion paint. Each wins in different situations. Here is how they compare on cost, how long they last, how long they take to apply and how they look.

Laminate

A factory-made decorative sheet glued onto plywood or MDF. The design, colour and finish are fixed at the factory, so what you pick in the showroom is what you get. See types of laminates.

PU / duco paint

A multi-coat sprayed finish on MDF or plywood, sanded between coats, in any colour and gloss level. It gives a seamless, premium look, but needs skilled painters and time to cure.

Emulsion (wall paint)

Regular interior wall paint. It is the cheapest way to colour a wall and easy to change, but it marks, stains and needs repainting every few years.

Laminate vs PU / Duco Paint

FactorLaminatePU / duco paint
CostLower; 1 mm sheet material is about ₹35–55 per sq ftHigher; several coats plus skilled labour
TimeGlued and trimmed in hoursSeveral days of coats, sanding and drying
Scratch & impactHard-wearing, hides wear in matte and textureChips can show the board underneath
Heat & moistureGood surface resistance; seal the edgesGood when well done; poor jobs can bubble or yellow
LookVisible edge line; huge choice of woodgrain, stone and textureSeamless, no edge line, any custom colour
ShapesBest on flat panels; post-forming for simple curvesAny shape, carving or profile
RepairDamaged sheet must be replacedCan be touched up and repainted
ConsistencyFactory-made, same every timeDepends on the painter's skill

Wall Laminate vs Emulsion Paint

Most homes mix the two: laminate on one feature wall, such as behind the TV or the bed, and paint everywhere else. See plywood for wall panelling for the backing board. Weighing laminate against tiles instead? See laminate vs tiles.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose laminate if

You want durable, fast and fair-priced

Kitchens, wardrobes, kids' rooms, rentals, offices, and any furniture that takes daily knocks. It is also the right pick if you need the job done quickly.

Choose PU / duco if

You want seamless and custom

Curved or carved shutters, exact colour matching, a no-edge-line luxury look, and furniture that will be handled gently.

Choose emulsion if

Budget and flexibility come first

For most walls. It costs the least and you can change the colour whenever you like.

Mix them

The common middle path

Laminate on carcasses and inner faces, PU on a few statement shutters. Laminate on one wall, paint on the rest.

Board Choice Matters for Both

Laminate is usually pressed onto plywood. PU and duco are best on MDF, whose smooth face takes paint without grain showing through. In kitchens and bathrooms, use BWP / marine plywood or HDHMR under either finish. For a full paint walkthrough, see how to paint plywood. For laminate thickness and sheet counts, see the laminate size guide.

Our Lati Bazar store stocks laminates from Durian, Greenlam, Merino, Royale Touche, Cedarlam and more, along with plywood and MDF for either finish. Rates are on our laminate dealer page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, laminate or PU paint?

Laminate is better for durability, speed and cost, which makes it ideal for kitchens, wardrobes and busy homes. PU paint is better when you want a seamless look, a custom colour or curved and carved shutters.

Is laminate cheaper than paint?

For furniture, laminate is usually cheaper than PU or duco paint once the skilled labour and multiple coats are included. For walls, emulsion paint is cheaper than wall laminate upfront.

Does laminate last longer than paint?

On furniture, laminate generally holds up better against scratches and knocks than PU paint. On walls, laminate lasts many years, while emulsion paint needs repainting every few years.

Can I paint over laminate?

It is possible with sanding and a bonding primer, but the finish rarely lasts well on a smooth laminate surface. Replacing the laminate sheet usually gives a better result.

Which board is best for PU paint finish?

MDF is the usual choice because its smooth face takes paint without grain showing through. In wet areas, use HDHMR or BWP plywood with a good primer.

Which is better for a kitchen, laminate or PU?

For a busy family kitchen, laminate is usually better: it resists daily wear, costs less and needs no skilled painter. PU suits a seamless luxury look with careful use.

Does PU paint turn yellow?

Poor-quality or badly applied PU can yellow over time, especially on white shades in strong light. Laminate colours are fixed at the factory and do not yellow in normal indoor use.
