Laminate Sheet Size & Thickness Guide
Almost every laminate in India comes in one size, 8 × 4 ft, so the real choice is thickness. This guide covers what each thickness is for, when 0.8 mm is enough and when you need 1 mm, and how to work out how many sheets your job needs.
Standard Laminate Sheet Size
The standard laminate sheet in India is 8 ft × 4 ft (2440 × 1220 mm), which is 32 sq ft per sheet. It matches the standard size of plywood, MDF and blockboard, so one laminate sheet covers one face of one board with almost no joints.
A few brands also make larger sheets, such as 10 × 4 ft, for tall wardrobe shutters and wall panels where you want no horizontal joint. These are usually made to order, so ask about stock before you plan around them. Brands also give out small A4-size sample chips so you can check a colour against paint or flooring at home.
Laminate Thickness and What Each Is For
| Thickness | Common name | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| 0.8–0.92 mm | Inner laminate, liner | Inside wardrobes, drawers, cabinet carcasses and shelves, and as the balancing sheet on the hidden back face of shutters to stop them bowing |
| 1 mm | Decorative laminate | Shutters, doors, TV units, table tops — the visible face of most furniture |
| 1.25–1.5 mm | Heavy-duty decorative | Counters, reception desks, commercial furniture with heavy daily wear |
| 3 mm and above | Compact laminate | Self-supporting: toilet cubicles, lab tops, lockers — no board needed |
0.8 mm vs 1 mm Laminate
| 0.8 mm (inner) | 1 mm (decorative) | |
|---|---|---|
| Designs | Plain whites, off-whites, simple linear patterns | Full range: woodgrain, gloss, matte, textured, stone |
| Edge strength | Can chip on corners that take knocks | Holds up far better on edges and handles |
| Impact & scratch | Fine for low-touch surfaces | Built for daily contact |
| Cost per sheet | Lower | Roughly 2–3× an inner sheet |
| Use it for | Insides of wardrobes, drawers, cabinets | Shutters, doors, tops, anything people see and touch |
The usual mix for a wardrobe or kitchen is 1 mm on the outside, 0.8 mm inside. That puts the money where it is seen and saves on surfaces behind closed doors.

How Many Laminate Sheets Do You Need?
Step 1. Add up the area of every face you will cover, in sq ft. Count both sides of each shutter: the front gets 1 mm, the back gets inner laminate.
Step 2. Divide by 32 (one 8 × 4 sheet).
Step 3. Add 10–15% for cutting waste, and more if the design has a grain direction that must line up.
Example: a 6 ft wide × 7 ft tall wardrobe has about 42 sq ft of shutter front. 42 ÷ 32 = 1.3, so buy 2 sheets of 1 mm for the front. The shutter backs need another 2 sheets of inner laminate. Add inner laminate for the carcass, shelves and sides. For the board count, see how much plywood a wardrobe needs.
| Job (typical size) | 1 mm sheets (outside) | Inner sheets (inside + backs) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 × 7 ft wardrobe | 2 | 6–8 |
| 10 ft straight modular kitchen | 3–4 | 8–10 |
| 6 ft TV unit | 1–2 | 2–3 |
| 5 × 2.5 ft study table | 1 | 1 |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard size of a laminate sheet?
The standard laminate sheet size in India is 8 x 4 ft (2440 x 1220 mm), which covers 32 sq ft. Some brands make larger sheets such as 10 x 4 ft to order.
What is the difference between 0.8 mm and 1 mm laminate?
0.8 mm is inner laminate for the inside of wardrobes and cabinets. 1 mm is decorative laminate for visible faces; it comes in more designs and resists chipping and scratches better.
Which laminate thickness is best for kitchen cabinets?
Use 1 mm on the shutters and 0.8 mm inner laminate inside the cabinets, on BWP or marine plywood.
How many laminate sheets do I need for a wardrobe?
A 6 x 7 ft wardrobe typically needs about 2 sheets of 1 mm laminate for the front and 6 to 8 inner sheets for the shutter backs, carcass and shelves. Add 10 to 15 percent for waste.
What is a balancing laminate?
A thin 0.5 to 0.8 mm sheet glued to the back face of a panel so both faces pull evenly. Without it, large shutters with laminate on one side tend to bow.
