Laminate Guide · Finish Comparison

Matte vs Gloss vs Textured Laminate: Which Is Better?

The same design can look completely different in gloss, matte or texture, and it will also age differently. Here is how the three finishes compare in daily use, and which one suits each part of your home.

Three grey wardrobe shutters side by side in matte, high-gloss and textured woodgrain laminate

High gloss

A mirror-smooth, reflective surface. Colours look deeper and small rooms look bigger and brighter. The trade-off: every fingerprint, water spot and fine scratch shows.

Matte / suede

A flat, low-sheen surface with a soft feel. It looks calm and modern and hides everyday wear well. Very dark matte shades can show greasy marks unless the sheet is anti-fingerprint.

Textured

A raised surface you can feel, such as wood pores, stone, linen or leather. It looks the most natural and hides scratches best. Deep textures can hold dust and need a soft brush now and then.

Which Finish Where?

Kitchen

Matte or textured on base units

Base shutters take hands, oil and knocks, so choose matte, textured or anti-fingerprint. Gloss works well on upper units, where it catches light and is touched less. More in our kitchen cabinet laminate guide.

Wardrobe

Matte, suede or woodgrain texture

Large shutters in bedrooms look best without glare, and doors opened every day stay clean. A gloss mirror panel or one gloss accent strip adds shine. See best plywood for wardrobes.

TV unit & living

Gloss or fluted as a feature

Rarely touched and seen from a distance, so it is the best place for gloss. Keep matte behind the screen to avoid reflections, or use a fluted panel (see fluted vs textured). Ideas in plywood for TV units.

Office & study

Textured or matte tops

Desks see elbows, laptops and pens all day. Texture hides the marks and matte stops screen glare. See plywood for office furniture.

Kids' room

Textured or matte

Sticky hands and toy knocks are hard on gloss. A textured solid colour hides both and cleans easily.

Pooja unit

Gloss or stone texture

A small, low-touch unit is a good place for gloss white, or marble- and stone-textured sheets.

Mixing Finishes

You do not have to pick only one finish. Many modern interiors use matte for the large surfaces and gloss for one accent: gloss upper kitchen units over matte base units, or a gloss centre panel in a matte wardrobe. Two rules keep it looking planned. Use the same colour family across both finishes, and keep the gloss where hands rarely go. Picking shades by direction? See laminate colours as per Vastu. Caring for Each Finish

Gloss: use a microfibre cloth with mild soap water and dry it straight away to avoid streaks. Never use scrubbers or abrasive powder, which leave permanent haze. Matte: wipe with a damp cloth. Deal with oil marks quickly on dark shades. Textured: wipe along the texture and use a soft brush on deep grooves. For kitchen routines, see how to maintain a clean kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, matte or glossy laminate?

Matte is better for surfaces people touch every day, such as wardrobes, base kitchen units and desks, because it hides scratches and fingerprints. Gloss is better for low-touch feature surfaces where you want shine and a brighter room.

Does glossy laminate scratch easily?

Gloss laminate is as hard as matte, but scratches and scuffs show much more on a shiny surface. Clean it only with a soft cloth and mild soap, never a scrubber.

Is textured laminate good for kitchens?

Yes. Textured laminate hides scratches and fingerprints well, so it suits base kitchen shutters. Wipe along the texture and brush out deep grooves occasionally.

Which laminate finish is best for a wardrobe?

Matte, suede or a woodgrain texture suits most wardrobes because the doors are handled every day and large gloss shutters create glare in bedrooms.

Can I use gloss and matte laminate together?

Yes. A popular combination is matte base units with gloss upper units in the kitchen, or a matte wardrobe with one gloss panel. Keep both finishes in the same colour family.
