How Vastu Links Colour to Direction

Vastu Shastra links each direction of a home with one of the five elements: water, fire, earth, air and space. Each element has its own colours. The idea is that furniture colours should support the element of the zone they sit in. Laminate covers the largest visible surfaces in most homes, such as wardrobes, kitchen shutters and wall panels, so it is where Vastu colour choices matter most.

Note: Vastu is traditional guidance and different Vastu consultants may advise slightly differently. The table below reflects the most commonly followed recommendations. For a specific home, follow your own consultant.

Vastu Laminate Colours for Each Room

Kitchen · South-East

Warm and light shades

White, cream, warm yellow, peach, orange accents and light woodgrains support the fire zone. Black, dark blue and dark grey are the colours most often advised against for large kitchen areas. See our kitchen cabinet laminate guide for finishes.

Master bedroom · South-West

Earthy and grounding

Beige, brown, peach and rich woodgrain wardrobes suit the earth zone and give a calm, stable feel. Avoid very bright red or large black shutters. Wardrobe board options: best plywood for wardrobes; colour combinations in bedroom laminate ideas.

Pooja unit · North-East

White, cream and marble

White, cream, light yellow and marble-look laminates are the traditional choice. Light wood such as ash or maple also works. Avoid black and very dark shades in the pooja area. Design ideas are in pooja room laminate designs.

Living room · North / East

Light and airy

Off-white, pastel green, light blue and light oak for TV units and wall panels. Use darker shades only as a small accent. Ideas in plywood for TV units.

Kids' room · West / North-West

Soft, cheerful colours

Light green, sky blue, cream and soft yellow. Bright accents are fine on small panels. Matte or textured finishes cope best with kids.

Study / office · North / East

Focus colours

Light green, cream, pale yellow and light woodgrain tops are the usual picks for a study table or home office. See plywood for office furniture.

Following Vastu Without Losing a Modern Look

Use the Vastu colour on the largest surface. The shutters or wardrobe front set the room's colour. Handles, profiles and one accent panel can be anything you like.

Lean on woodgrains. Light and mid-tone woodgrain laminates are accepted in almost every direction, which makes them the easiest Vastu-safe choice for open-plan homes.

Choose finish separately from colour. Vastu guidance is about colour, not finish, so a Vastu-suitable cream can still be gloss, matte or textured. See matte vs gloss vs textured laminate.

Want a dark kitchen? If you love charcoal or navy but want to follow Vastu, keep the dark shade on a small area such as the tall unit or the island, and use a light shade for the main run.

Match paint and laminate together. Pick the wall colour and the laminate shade at the same time. Our kitchen colour ideas pair well with the shades above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which laminate colour is best for the kitchen as per Vastu?

For a south-east kitchen, Vastu guidance usually suggests white, cream, warm yellow, peach, orange accents and light woodgrains. Black, dark blue and dark grey are commonly advised against on large areas.

Which wardrobe laminate colour is good as per Vastu?

For a master bedroom in the south-west, earthy shades such as beige, brown, peach and woodgrain are the usual Vastu recommendation. Very bright red and black are typically avoided on large shutters.

Which laminate colour suits a pooja room?

White, cream, light yellow, marble-look and light wood laminates are the traditional choices for a pooja unit in the north-east. Dark shades like black are avoided.

Is black laminate bad as per Vastu?

Many Vastu consultants advise against large black surfaces in the kitchen, pooja area and north-east. Black is generally accepted as a small accent, and some consultants allow it in the west or south.

Does laminate finish matter for Vastu?

Vastu guidance is about colour and direction, not finish, so gloss, matte and textured sheets are all fine in a suitable shade.
