Pooja Room and Mandir Designs: 15 Ideas for Homes, with Vastu Tips and Cost
Every Indian home has a place for prayer, whether a full pooja room or a small mandir on the living room wall. A good design keeps the idols at the right height, stores diyas, agarbatti and pooja items neatly, survives daily lamp heat and oil, and follows Vastu. Here are fifteen pooja room and mandir designs, including doors, the Vastu basics, the right materials (and whether MDF is good for a mandir), and the material cost at our Lati Bazar store: from about ₹4,063 for a small wall-mounted mandir.

Best Materials for a Mandir (and Is MDF Good?)
| Part | Material | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Base, sides and shelves | 18 mm MR plywood (BWP if near a sink or damp wall) | Strong, holds screws, takes the weight of brass idols |
| Jaali and carved panels | MDF, CNC cut | Smooth, precise patterns and a clean painted finish |
| Back panel | 12 mm plywood or MDF | Flat surface for laminate, veneer or backlight |
| Diya area | Heat-resistant or fire-retardant laminate, or a metal or stone tray | Protects from lamp heat and oil. See fire-retardant laminate |
| Finish | Marble-look or light matte laminate, or teak veneer | Easy to clean soot and oil |
Is MDF good for a mandir? Yes, for decorative jaali, carved and painted panels, where its smooth surface gives crisp detail. Use plywood for the base and shelves that carry idols, and keep MDF away from water used in pooja; seal every edge. More: HDHMR vs MDF · MDF board.

Pooja Room Door Ideas
For a separate pooja room, a double-shutter door with brass bells is the classic choice; a jaali or glass upper panel lets the lamp glow through; sliding doors suit mandirs in living rooms. Light, slim doors are easier to open every day. More door ideas: double door designs · panel door designs (see also arch designs).
Care and Common Mistakes
Keep diyas on a metal plate, not directly on laminate; wipe oil and soot weekly with a damp cloth; and ventilate so agarbatti smoke does not stain the ceiling. Common mistakes are shelves too shallow for a diya and bell, a mandir built too low or too high, dark glossy finishes that show soot, and no storage for pooja items.
