HDHMR vs MDF: Which Board Is Right for Your Furniture?
MDF and HDHMR look alike: both are smooth fibre boards with no grain, perfect for paint, laminate and CNC designs. The difference is inside. HDHMR is pressed denser with moisture-resistant resin, so it is stronger, holds screws better and copes with kitchen and bathroom humidity, while ordinary interior MDF swells if it gets wet. At our Lati Bazar store, 18 mm HDHMR costs about 73% more than interior MDF. Here is when that extra is worth paying.
What is MDF?
Medium Density Fibreboard: fine wood fibres bonded with resin under heat and pressure. Smooth, uniform and easy to cut, paint and route. Interior MDF is for dry rooms; exterior and boiling-water grades resist more moisture. HDHMR is itself a type of MDF: a high-density, green-core grade that resists moisture better than exterior MDF. What is HDHMR?

Where exterior MDF fits: all three are MDF. Interior MDF (brown core) is for dry rooms, exterior MDF (light pink core) handles more humidity, and HDHMR (green core) is the densest and most moisture resistant of the three, which is why it is the usual choice for kitchens and bathroom vanities.

Is HDHMR Better Than MDF?
For anything near water or carrying load, yes. HDHMR is stronger, holds screws better and resists humidity far better. For dry-room decorative work, where the board is painted or laminated and carries little weight, interior MDF gives the same smooth finish for much less money. Many interiors use both: MDF for wall panels and decor, HDHMR for kitchen and bathroom shutters, and plywood for the heavy carcasses. Working Tips for Both Boards
Cut with a sharp, fine-tooth blade to avoid chipped edges. Seal or edge-band every cut edge, even on HDHMR. Use confirmat screws or minifix fittings rather than ordinary wood screws at edges, and pre-drill. Prime before painting: fibre edges soak up paint unless sealed first. Store sheets flat and off the floor.
Common Mistakes
Using interior MDF under a sink or in a bathroom; calling HDHMR “waterproof”; long unsupported MDF shelves; and paying for HDHMR in dry wall panelling where MDF works just as well.
