HDHMR vs Plywood: Which Board Is Better for Your Furniture?

HDHMR (high density high moisture resistance) board and plywood are the two most asked-about materials for modern Indian furniture. HDHMR is a dense, smooth fibre board that paints and routes beautifully; plywood is cross-laminated wood veneer that is stronger, holds screws better and, in BWP grade, is truly waterproof. Here is an honest side-by-side comparison, today's prices at our Lati Bazar store, and which board to use for each part of your home.

What is HDHMR board?

Wood fibres and chips from fast-growing trees and forest waste, bonded with moisture-resistant resin under high heat and pressure. It is denser and more moisture resistant than ordinary MDF, with a smooth, even surface and no grain or voids. Also sold as HDMR. See what is HDHMR board.

What is plywood?

Thin wood veneers glued in layers with the grain of each layer at right angles to the next. That cross-lamination gives high strength in every direction and excellent screw holding. MR grade is for dry rooms; BWP (boiling-water-proof) marine grade is for kitchens and bathrooms. See MR vs BWR vs BWP.

HDHMR vs Plywood Price in Ahmedabad

At 12 mm the order is the same: MR plywood ₹60, Action Tesa HDHMR ₹71.83 and BWP ₹86 per sq ft. So HDHMR is not a cheaper substitute for BWP plywood at our rates; at 18 mm they cost about the same. You pay for HDHMR because of its finish, not to save money. Rates: Action Tesa HDHMR price list · Greenply HDMR · 18 mm plywood price.

Is HDHMR Waterproof?

No. HDHMR is moisture resistant: it handles humidity, steam and the occasional splash far better than MDF or particle board. But if water sits on an unsealed edge or gets into a screw hole for a long time, the fibres can still swell. BWP plywood, bonded with phenolic resin, survives even boiling water tests. That is why the area right under a sink or in a shower zone should be BWP plywood (or PVC or WPC board), while HDHMR is fine for kitchen shutters and bathroom vanity doors whose edges are banded.

BWP Plywood vs HDHMR

Choose BWP for sink bases, the kitchen carcass, bathroom vanities, and anywhere that carries heavy loads or might get properly wet. Choose HDHMR for shutters in the same kitchen when you want a smooth PU-painted, membrane, fluted or CNC-grooved look that plywood cannot give. Price is close, so decide on performance. See 710 plywood price and marine vs waterproof plywood.

Commercial Plywood vs HDHMR

Commercial (MR) plywood at ₹65 per sq ft is much cheaper than 18 mm HDHMR and is the right board for dry-room carcasses: wardrobes, beds, study tables and TV units. HDHMR earns its extra cost only on visible, finished surfaces or in humid rooms. See commercial vs marine plywood.

HDHMR

Fluted panels, jaali, profiled shutters and PU finishes.

Wall panelling

HDHMR for grooves and paint; plywood with laminate or veneer.

HDHMR vs WPC

If the real worry is water, compare HDHMR with WPC board too. WPC is waterproof and termite-proof right through, at ₹146 per sq ft for 18 mm, while HDHMR gives the smoother painted finish at a lower price. Use WPC for utility, balcony and under-sink units; HDHMR for shutters. See WPC vs plywood and PVC vs WPC.

Tips for Working With Each

HDHMR: use confirmat screws or minifix fittings, pre-drill edges, seal or edge-band every cut edge, and use a sharp blade to avoid chipping. Plywood: buy branded, calibrated sheets, check for voids at the edges, pick BWP wherever water is likely, and protect the face with laminate or veneer. Many good carpenters now mix both in one project, which usually gives the best result. Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, HDHMR or plywood?

Plywood is stronger, holds screws better at the edges and, in BWP grade, is waterproof, so it is better for carcasses, sink bases and heavy loads. HDHMR has a smoother surface and is better for painted, membrane and CNC-routed shutters.

Is HDHMR cheaper than plywood?

Not at our rates. 18 mm Action Tesa HDHMR is ₹106.87 per sq ft, about the same as 18 mm marine BWP plywood at ₹110, and far more than MR plywood at ₹74 or commercial plywood at ₹65. GST extra.

Is HDHMR waterproof?

No. HDHMR is moisture resistant, not waterproof. It handles humidity and splashes well, but long exposure to water at unsealed edges can make it swell. Use BWP plywood, PVC or WPC where water stands.

Is HDHMR good for kitchen cabinets?

It is good for kitchen shutters with sealed edges. For the carcass, especially the sink base, BWP plywood is the safer choice.

Is HDHMR good for wardrobes?

Yes, for wardrobe shutters that will be painted or grooved. For the wardrobe body and long shelves, MR plywood is stronger, lighter and cheaper.

Does HDHMR hold screws well?

Face screw holding is good, but edges are weaker than plywood. Use confirmat screws or minifix connectors and pre-drill.

What is the difference between HDHMR and HDMR?

They are names for the same kind of high density, moisture-resistant fibre board. Action Tesa calls it HDHMR and Greenply calls it HDMR.
