Plywood vs MDF vs Particle Board: Which Should You Choose?
Plywood, MDF and particle board are the three boards behind almost every wardrobe, kitchen and TV unit in India. They look similar once laminated, but they are built very differently, and that decides how long your furniture lasts. Plywood is layered wood veneer, MDF is fine wood fibre, and particle board is pressed wood chips. Here is how they compare on strength, water and screw holding, what each costs at our Lati Bazar store, and which to use where.
What Are These Three Boards?
Plywood
Thin wood veneers glued in layers with the grain crossed at right angles. The strongest of the three, with the best screw holding. MR grade for dry rooms, BWP marine grade for wet areas. See plywood.
MDF
Medium Density Fibreboard: wood fibres bonded with resin into a dense, smooth, grain-free sheet. The best surface for paint and CNC designs. See MDF board.
Particle board
Wood chips and sawdust pressed with resin. Light and economical, and usually used pre-laminated or laminated. HMR grades resist humidity. See HMR particle board.

| Factor | Plywood | MDF | Particle board |
|---|---|---|---|
| Made from | Cross-laminated veneers | Fine wood fibres + resin | Wood chips + resin |
| Strength | Highest | Medium; rigid but brittle at edges | Lowest |
| Screw holding | Excellent, face and edge | Good on face, weak at edges | Weak; screws loosen if re-fixed |
| Water | MR resists humidity; BWP is waterproof | Interior swells; HDHMR resists humidity | Swells if soaked, even HMR |
| Sag on long shelves | Least | Moderate | Most |
| Surface | Grain; laminate or veneer | Smoothest; paint, PU, CNC | Laminate only |
| Weight | Lightest for its strength | Heaviest | Medium |
| Repair | Easy to re-screw and patch | Hard once swollen | Hard once swollen or stripped |
| Lifespan | Longest | Good in dry rooms | Shortest |
Plywood vs MDF vs Particle Board Price in Ahmedabad
18 mm boards, per sq ft and per 8 × 4 ft sheet at our Lati Bazar store, cheapest first. GST extra.
| Board (18 mm) | Per sq ft | Per sheet |
|---|---|---|
| Interior MDF (Action Tesa) | ₹61.6 | ₹1,971 |
| Commercial plywood | ₹65 | ₹2,080 |
| HMR particle board (Action Tesa) | ₹66 | ₹2,112 |
| MR plywood | ₹74 | ₹2,368 |
| HDHMR (Action Tesa) | ₹106.87 | ₹3,420 |
| Marine BWP plywood | ₹110 | ₹3,520 |
Surprised? At 18 mm, the price gap is small: HMR (moisture-resistant) particle board, interior MDF and commercial plywood are within a few rupees, and MR plywood is only about ₹8 more per sq ft than particle board. That is why we rarely recommend particle board for a home: for about ₹256 more per sheet you get plywood that is stronger and holds screws far better. At 12 mm: particle board ₹48.13, commercial plywood ₹51, MR plywood ₹60. Rates: plywood · MDF · particle board.
Which Board for Which Furniture
| Furniture | Best board | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Wardrobe carcass | MR plywood | Holds hinges, channels and long shelves. See best material for wardrobe |
| Kitchen base and sink | BWP plywood | Only waterproof option of the three. See kitchen materials |
| Painted shutters, CNC, jaali | MDF (HDHMR in humid rooms) | Smoothest surface |
| Bed box and storage bed | Plywood | Weight, lifting and screws |
| TV unit | Plywood body; MDF for fluted or painted panels | See below |
| Wall panelling | MDF or thin plywood | Light load, smooth finish |
| Office desks, temporary or rental fit-outs | Particle board | Lowest cost for light, dry use |
Best Sheet Material for a TV Unit
A TV unit carries a heavy TV or wall bracket, a set-top box and speakers, and has wires and heat behind it. Build the carcass, shelves and bracket backing in 18 mm plywood so screws and the wall mount stay tight. Use MDF for the decorative parts: fluted panels, painted shutters or a CNC backdrop. Particle board is fine only for a light, floor-standing unit with short shelves. Ideas: plywood thickness for furniture (see also TV unit designs).
Engineered Wood vs Particle Board
“Engineered wood” is the family name for any man-made wood board: plywood, blockboard, MDF, HDHMR and particle board. So particle board is engineered wood too, just the lowest-strength member. When a showroom says a piece is “engineered wood”, ask which board it is: the difference between particle board and plywood matters more than the label. See engineered wood vs solid wood and engineered wood vs plywood.
MDF vs Particle Board
MDF is denser and smoother, takes paint and routing, and holds screws better on the face. Particle board is lighter and is used mostly pre-laminated in flat-pack furniture. At 18 mm our interior MDF is actually slightly cheaper than HMR particle board, so for dry-room panels MDF is usually the better buy; for humid rooms compare HMR particle board with HDHMR.
Buying Tips
Ask for the brand, grade and thickness in writing; check plywood edges for gaps and even layers (see how to spot fake plywood); seal every cut edge of MDF and particle board; use confirmat screws in MDF and particle board; and never use MDF or particle board under a sink.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better, plywood, MDF or particle board?
Plywood is the strongest, holds screws best and, in BWP grade, is waterproof, so it is best for wardrobes, kitchens and beds. MDF is best for painted and CNC work. Particle board is the lowest-cost option for light, dry-room furniture.
Is particle board cheaper than plywood?
Slightly. At our store, 18 mm HMR particle board is ₹66 per sq ft, commercial plywood ₹65 and MR plywood ₹74. The small gap is why plywood is usually the better value for home furniture.
Is MDF stronger than particle board?
Yes. MDF is denser, holds face screws better and has a smoother surface. Both are weaker than plywood at the edges.
Which board is best for a TV unit?
An 18 mm plywood carcass and shelves, with MDF for fluted, painted or CNC decorative panels.
Is particle board waterproof?
No. Even HMR (moisture-resistant) particle board swells if it is soaked. Never use it under a sink or in a bathroom.
Is particle board engineered wood?
Yes. Engineered wood includes plywood, blockboard, MDF, HDHMR and particle board. Particle board is the lowest-strength of these.
How long does particle board furniture last?
In a dry room with light use, several years. It is the first board to sag, lose screws or swell, so plywood lasts much longer for daily-use furniture.
