Planning Tips

Fix the TV to the wall, not the panel: bolt the TV bracket through the panel into the wall, or block the panel with solid backing. Plan wiring first: leave a conduit or a 2–3 inch cable channel behind the panel, a cut-out in the console top, and power points behind the unit. Ventilate: leave gaps or a vented back behind set-top boxes and amplifiers. Keep it off the floor with a floating console or a plinth, so mopping water does not reach the plywood. Match the room: repeat the laminate or veneer of the wardrobe, doors or dining unit.

TV Units for Small Living Rooms

Choose a floating console with one or two open shelves, a light matte laminate, and a slim back panel instead of a full storage wall. A corner unit saves space in narrow rooms, and a mirror or glass shelf beside the TV makes the room feel wider. For a warm look without bulk, use a single veneer or woodgrain panel with an LED cove.

Common Mistakes

A unit narrower than the TV; high-gloss laminate right behind the screen (reflections); no plan for wires; thin shelves that sag under speakers; and mounting a heavy TV on a thin panel. Most TV unit problems are fixed by the right thickness and a wiring plan made before the carpenter starts.
