Louvers, Flutes and Ribs: The Same Idea, Different Builds

Vertical lines on a wall add depth, shadow and a sense of height. That is why wall louvers and fluted panels have become the go-to feature for TV walls, bed-backs, reception counters and ceiling bands. The word covers several products, from ready-made louver panels to CNC-grooved MDF and fluted laminate, and they differ a lot in depth, weight, water resistance and cost.

This guide compares the main ways to get the look, where each works, and how to install them so the lines stay straight. We stock the boards and laminates for most of these routes; ready-made louver panel availability changes, so ask us.

Installing a Fluted or Louvered Wall That Stays Straight

Start with a flat, dry wall. Any damp behind a panel will spread unseen, so fix it first. Fix a backing of battens or a plywood backing panel so slats and panels screw into wood, not plaster. Use a level and a laser line for the first panel; every line after follows it. Plan the joints at a groove so they disappear, and plan the ends with a finishing strip. Leave openings for switches, sockets and AC lines before panelling, and finish them with trims. For a TV wall, add a cable conduit and a recessed LED channel at the start, not after.

What it costs, and how to price it

Ready-made louver panels are priced per panel or per sq ft; CNC-grooved MDF is priced as the board plus CNC work plus finish; fluted laminate is priced per sheet. To compare quotes, work out the cost per sq ft of finished wall, including backing, fixing and trims. Board rates are on our MDF, PVC board and WPC board pages, and laminate rates on the laminate price list. Send us your wall size and the look you want, and we will price the routes side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between louvers and fluted panels?

Louvers are raised slats with deep gaps between them; fluted panels have rounded or grooved channels cut into a flat surface. Both give vertical lines; louvers cast deeper shadows.

Which louver material is best?

MDF or wood for dry rooms and a premium finish, PVC or WPC for bathrooms, balconies and humid walls, and fluted laminate for shutters and slim wall panels.

Can louvers be used in bathrooms?

Only PVC or WPC louvers, which are waterproof. MDF and wood will swell in wet areas.

How do I make a fluted wall with MDF?

Use MDF (HDMR for humid rooms), have the grooves CNC-routed to your design, then paint, PU or laminate it, fixed on a batten or plywood backing.

How are wall louvers priced?

Ready-made panels per panel or sq ft; CNC MDF as board plus CNC work plus finish; fluted laminate per sheet. Compare quotes as cost per sq ft of finished wall including backing and trims.
