MDF vs Plywood — Which One Should You Use?

Neither material is "better" — each wins in different places. Here is how they actually differ in strength, moisture handling and finish, with the real per-square-foot rates we sell both at in Ahmedabad.

Two Different Ways of Building a Wood Panel

Plywood is layers of thin wood veneer glued together with the grain of each layer running at right angles to the next. MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is wood reduced to fine fibres, mixed with resin and pressed into a single uniform slab. That single manufacturing difference explains almost everything else that follows — strength, surface finish, moisture behaviour and price.

This page compares them directly, thickness for thickness, using the rates we actually sell at our Lati Bazar counter today — not generic national averages. If you have not yet decided which grade of either material you need, our MDF grade selection guide and the MR vs BWR vs BWP plywood guide go deeper into each material on its own.

What Each Material Is Actually Good At

Both are engineered wood panels, but they are built to do different jobs well.

Plywood

Cross-Layered Veneer

The alternating grain direction of each veneer layer gives plywood excellent screw-holding strength and resistance to warping and sagging under load — even on a fairly long span. It flexes slightly rather than snapping, which matters for carcasses and shelves that carry weight.

The surface shows a wood grain pattern (unless veneered smooth) and small voids or overlaps can occur inside cheaper sheets. Best suited to anything structural — cabinet boxes, load-bearing shelves, bed frames.

BEST FOR: Carcasses, load-bearing shelves, bed frames, anything that gets screwed and unscrewed repeatedly
MDF

Compressed Fibre Core

The uniform fibre core has no grain and no internal voids, which gives MDF a perfectly smooth, flat surface — ideal for paint, laminate, veneer and CNC-routed detail. It cuts and machines cleanly with no tear-out along edges or curves.

It holds a single screw well but loses grip faster than plywood if that screw is removed and reinserted, and it sags more than plywood on long unsupported spans under heavy load. Best suited to flat, finish-critical panels.

BEST FOR: Wardrobe shutters, painted furniture, CNC-routed panels, wall cladding, TV units

MDF vs Plywood — Price at the Same Thickness

Rates below are our current per-square-foot counter prices at Lati Bazar for an 8 × 4 ft sheet (32 sq ft), ex-godown and excluding GST. Compare the grade that actually matches your moisture exposure — a like-for-like dry-area grade against a like-for-like wet-area grade, not just "MDF" against "plywood" as a blanket category.

Use Case Plywood Grade 18mm Rate MDF Grade 18mm Rate
Dry interior areas Commercial (IS 303) ₹65/sq ft Interior MDF (Greenply) ₹65.85/sq ft
Moderate humidity, no direct water MR Grade (IS 303) ₹74/sq ft Exterior MDF (Greenply) ₹84.30/sq ft
High moisture, kitchen/bathroom shutters MR / Marine (see note) HDMR MDF (Greenply) ₹110.30/sq ft
Direct, repeated water contact Marine / BWP (IS 710) ₹110/sq ft Boilo MDF (Greenply) ₹210.10/sq ft

Plywood rates are from our current plywood price list; MDF rates are from our MDF board range — see the Interior, Exterior, HDMR and Boilo pages for the full thickness ladder on each. At 25mm, Interior MDF is ₹97/sq ft against Greenply-stocked plywood at comparable thickness — call 8460783619 for the exact 25mm plywood rate on the day, as our published thickness ladder for house-grade plywood runs up to 18mm.

Note on the kitchen/bathroom row: we do not sell a plywood grade branded specifically "high-moisture, non-waterproof" the way HDMR sits between Exterior and Boilo MDF — for that level of exposure in plywood, most Ahmedabad carpenters step straight to Marine/BWP. See our MR vs BWR vs BWP guide for the plywood-side grade logic.

Where to Use Which — By Application

The two materials are complementary more often than competing. Here is how most modular furniture in Ahmedabad actually splits the two.

  • 🗄️

Cabinet & Wardrobe Carcass (the box)

The structural box takes the weight of everything stored inside, plus repeated opening and closing of hinges and drawer slides. Plywood's cross-grain construction holds hardware screws far better over years of use.

RECOMMENDED: Plywood — Commercial for dry areas, MR/BWP where moisture applies.
  • 🚪

    Shutter Doors & Visible Faces

What you actually see and touch is the flat face — and that is exactly where MDF's smooth, void-free surface gives a better result under laminate, paint or membrane-press PVC finish.

RECOMMENDED: MDF — Interior grade in dry rooms, HDMR or Boilo in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • 📐

    CNC-Routed Decorative Panels

Fine detail, curves and profiled edges cut cleanly in MDF's uniform fibre core with no grain tear-out. The same design routed in plywood often chips along the veneer layers.

RECOMMENDED: MDF, 12mm or 18mm depending on the depth of the routed pattern.
  • 🛏️

    Bed Frames & Long Shelving

Sustained weight over a span longer than roughly 600–700mm is where MDF starts to sag ahead of plywood at the same thickness. Beds carry body weight continuously for years.

RECOMMENDED: Plywood, 18mm or 19mm, with proper support battens on long spans.
  • 🧱

Wall Cladding & False Ceiling Panels

Lightweight, non-load-bearing, and the finish matters more than screw-holding strength. MDF's flat surface takes paint and laminate cleanly, and thinner gauges keep the panel light on wall fixings.

RECOMMENDED: MDF, 6mm to 12mm depending on the span between supports.

Comparing Both Materials Side by Side at Lati Bazar

Most projects use both materials, not one or the other — which is exactly why it pays to see actual sheets of each next to each other before you commit. At Samta Plywood Centre we stock the full plywood range (Commercial, MR Grade, Marine/BWP) and the full Greenply MDF range (Interior, Exterior, HDMR, Boilo) under one roof, so you can compare weight, surface and edge quality by hand.

MDF vs Plywood — Questions We Get Asked

It depends on the grade you are pricing on each side. At 18mm, our Interior MDF (₹65.85/sq ft) sits close to Commercial plywood (₹65/sq ft) — but once you move to a moisture-resistant or waterproof grade, MDF pulls ahead: 18mm HDMR MDF is ₹110.30/sq ft versus ₹110/sq ft for Marine/BWP plywood, and 18mm Boilo (boiling-water-proof) MDF is ₹210.10/sq ft, well above any plywood grade we stock. Compare the grade that matches your actual moisture exposure, not just the material name.
MDF's uniform, layer-free core actually resists warping better than plywood over a flat span, because there is no cross-grain veneer stress to release. Where MDF loses out is sustained load and long unsupported spans — a heavily loaded 700mm+ shelf will sag in MDF sooner than in plywood of the same thickness. For flat shutter panels that just hang on hinges, either material holds its shape; for load-bearing shelves and carcasses, plywood's layered construction carries weight better.
Yes, and it is standard practice. Most modular kitchens and wardrobes in Ahmedabad use plywood for the carcass (the structural box that holds screws, hinges and weight) and MDF for the shutter faces (where a dead-flat surface for laminate or paint matters more than load-bearing strength). This combination usually costs less than an all-plywood build and gives a better finish than an all-MDF one.
Both materials are bonded with formaldehyde-based resins, and both off-gas to some degree when freshly cut or unsealed. MDF has a larger internal glue surface area per board because it is made from fine fibres rather than solid veneer sheets, so a raw, unsealed MDF edge can smell stronger initially. Once edge-banded, laminated or painted and allowed to air out for a few days, the difference is not something most people notice in daily use. Look for E1-rated boards for enclosed furniture.
Plywood is generally easier to repair — it can be re-screwed, patched or re-veneered along its grain without the whole panel losing integrity. MDF holds screws less well on a second or third fixing at the same point, since the fibre around the hole compresses and does not spring back like plywood's cross-grain does. For furniture that gets frequently unscrewed and reassembled — like modular units that get rearranged — plywood carcasses tend to outlast MDF ones on hardware life.
