Plywood Guide · Grade Comparison
Commercial vs Marine Plywood: Which One Do You Need?
Commercial plywood (MR bond, IS:303) is the everyday board for dry rooms. Marine plywood (BWP, IS:710) is bonded with waterproof resin for kitchens, bathrooms and anything that meets water. At our Lati Bazar store, 18 mm marine costs ₹110 per sq ft against ₹65 for commercial, so knowing where each belongs saves real money.
Commercial plywood
Hardwood veneers bonded with urea-formaldehyde (MR) glue, made to IS:303. It handles normal indoor humidity but not standing water. The value choice for wardrobes, beds, TV units and office furniture. See commercial plywood.
Marine plywood
Denser hardwood veneers bonded with phenol-formaldehyde (BWP) resin, made to IS:710. It survives boiling-water tests, resists termites and borers when treated, and holds screws better. See marine plywood.

Which Plywood Goes Where
Bedroom wardrobe
Commercial or MR
A dry room with no water. Spend the saving on better laminate or hardware. See best plywood for wardrobes.
Bed, TV unit, study
Commercial
Indoor furniture away from water. Use 18 mm for frames and 12 mm for shelves.
Kitchen sink and hob base
Marine
Leaks, mopping and steam hit these first. This is where commercial board fails within a few monsoons.
Kitchen upper units
Marine or MR
Uppers stay drier, so MR grade can save money. Keep marine over the sink and near the chimney.
Bathroom vanity
Marine only
Constant splashes and humidity. Seal every edge. See marine plywood for bathrooms.
Balcony, utility, washing area
Marine
Rain, washing machines and open windows. Commercial board swells and delaminates here.
What the Difference Costs on a Real Kitchen
Take a typical Ahmedabad 2BHK kitchen that needs about 8 sheets of 18 mm for the carcass. In commercial plywood that is about ₹16,640; in marine, about ₹28,160, a difference of roughly ₹11,500 before GST.
Most of our customers take a middle path: marine for the sink and hob base units (about 3 sheets) and MR grade for the rest. That keeps the wet zone waterproof and brings the carcass to around ₹22,400. For a dry-room wardrobe, commercial plywood is usually enough, as long as the room has no seepage from a bathroom wall. If the kitchen sees steam but no standing water, BWR (boiling water resistant) plywood is the middle grade worth pricing too.
Mistakes We See at the Counter
Paying marine rates for a bedroom wardrobe. A wardrobe in a dry room gains little from BWP resin. Using commercial plywood under the sink to save money, then replacing the whole base unit two years later. Trusting a "waterproof" stamp without IS:710: real marine plywood carries the IS:710 mark and a brand batch number. Mixing grades without labelling: tell your carpenter which sheets go where before cutting starts. More on this in common mistakes when buying marine plywood.
How to Tell Them Apart at the Shop
Check the stamp on the face (IS:303 for commercial, IS:710 for marine). Look at the edge: marine shows tight, even layers with no gaps. Feel the weight: an 18 mm marine sheet is noticeably heavier. And ask for the bill with the grade written on it. For the full grade picture, see MR vs BWR vs BWP plywood and IS:710 vs IS:303.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between commercial and marine plywood?
Commercial plywood uses MR (urea-formaldehyde) glue and is made to IS:303 for dry indoor use. Marine plywood uses BWP (phenol-formaldehyde) resin and is made to IS:710, so it is waterproof and suits kitchens, bathrooms and balconies.
What is the price of marine plywood vs commercial plywood in Ahmedabad?
At Samta Plywood Centre, 18 mm commercial plywood is ₹65 per sq ft (about ₹2,080 per 8x4 sheet) and 18 mm marine plywood is ₹110 per sq ft (about ₹3,520 per sheet), ex-godown with GST extra.
Can commercial plywood be used in a kitchen?
Only in dry areas such as upper units away from the sink. For sink and hob base units, marine (BWP) plywood is the safe choice because leaks and mopping swell commercial board.
Is marine plywood fully waterproof?
The board and its glue are waterproof, but exposed edges and cut faces can still absorb water. Seal all edges with edge banding or laminate for long life.
Is commercial plywood good for wardrobes?
Yes. For a wardrobe in a dry bedroom, commercial or MR grade plywood with good laminate is a sensible, cost-effective choice.
How can I check if plywood is really marine grade?
Look for the IS:710 mark, a brand name and batch number on the sheet, a dense gap-free core at the edge, and ask for the grade on your bill.
Is marine plywood heavier than commercial plywood?
Yes. Marine plywood uses denser hardwood veneers and more resin, so an 18 mm marine sheet is noticeably heavier than the same size in commercial grade.
