Gurjan Plywood vs Marine Plywood: Differences, Waterproofing and How to Identify Gurjan
“Gurjan or marine?” is one of the most common questions at our counter, and it is a trick question. Gurjan describes the wood species of the face veneers; marine describes the grade and glue. So a board can be gurjan and marine at the same time, or gurjan and only MR grade. Here is the real difference, whether gurjan plywood is waterproof, how to identify genuine gurjan, what hardwood plywood means, and today's rates at our Lati Bazar store.
Gurjan Plywood vs Marine Plywood
| Factor | Gurjan plywood | Marine plywood |
|---|---|---|
| What the name tells you | The wood species of the face (and sometimes core) veneers | The grade: waterproof glue and strict quality (IS:710) |

Is Gurjan Plywood Waterproof?
Not automatically. Gurjan is a dense, naturally durable hardwood, so gurjan veneers handle humidity better than softer species. But water resistance comes from the glue. Gurjan plywood made with MR glue will still delaminate if it is soaked; gurjan plywood made to BWP / IS:710 is waterproof. Always check the grade stamp, and for sink bases and bathrooms buy BWP or marine grade. Home tests are in can plywood be waterproof.

What Is Hardwood Plywood?
Hardwood plywood uses veneers from hardwood species such as gurjan instead of softwoods such as pine. It is denser, holds screws better near edges and resists dents, which is why it suits furniture that is handled every day and high-end work. Softwood and plantation cores are lighter and cheaper. Species still does not decide water resistance: the glue grade does. Compare: hardwood vs softwood plywood.
Which Should You Buy?
Kitchens, bathrooms, sink bases, ground floors: marine / BWP (ideally gurjan-faced). High-end wardrobes and furniture in dry rooms: gurjan-faced MR or BWR for a dense, smooth face. Budget dry-room furniture: branded MR plywood. See MR vs BWR vs BWP.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between gurjan and marine plywood?
Gurjan refers to the wood species of the veneers; marine refers to the grade, with boiling-waterproof glue and strict quality under IS:710. A board can be both gurjan-faced and marine grade.
Is gurjan plywood waterproof?
Only if it is made in BWP or IS:710 marine grade. Gurjan plywood with MR glue is moisture resistant, not waterproof.
How can I identify gurjan plywood?
Look for a reddish to pinkish brown face with fine, straight grain, a heavier weight, even gap-free plies at the edge, and a stamp that states gurjan face with the grade and IS mark.
Which is better, gurjan or marine plywood?
For wet areas, marine (BWP) is essential; gurjan-faced marine is the best of both. For dry-room furniture, gurjan-faced MR or BWR gives a dense, smooth face.
What is hardwood plywood?
Plywood made with hardwood veneers such as gurjan. It is denser, holds screws better and resists dents compared with softwood plywood.
What is the price of marine plywood in Ahmedabad?
18 mm marine BWP plywood is ₹110 per sq ft, Century Sainik 710 ₹116.10 and Century Bond Shield 21 ₹136 per sq ft at our store, GST extra.
Is gurjan plywood good for kitchens?
Yes, in BWP or marine grade. Gurjan in MR grade should not be used under the sink.
