10 Costly Plywood Mistakes Contractors Make, and How to Avoid Them
For a contractor or carpenter, a plywood mistake is never just a board problem. It is a call-back, a free repair, a lost referral. Most failures we see at the counter trace back to the same ten decisions made at the order stage or on site. Here they are, with the fix for each, so your next job is the one clients recommend.
The 10 Mistakes and Their Fixes
Mistake 1
One grade for the whole job
MR board under a sink or on a bathroom wall fails first. Fix: specify BWP for wet zones and MR for dry rooms on the order itself. See commercial vs marine plywood.
Mistake 2
Trusting a “BWP” label
A stamp saying waterproof is not IS:710. Fix: check for the IS:710 mark, brand and batch number, and put the grade on the bill. See 710 plywood price.
Mistake 3
Thin carcass to win the quote
A 12 mm carcass loosens hinges and channels within a year. Fix: 16–18 mm for load-bearing parts, 12 mm for shelves, 6 mm for backs. See plywood thickness for furniture.
Mistake 4
Not measuring actual thickness
“18 mm” that measures 16.5 mm throws off hinge cups and joints. Fix: measure a few sheets from every lot with a vernier before cutting.
Mistake 5
Mixing lots on one job
Sheets from different batches vary slightly in thickness and face, and laminates in shade. Fix: order the whole job at once, and keep laminate for one room from one batch.
Mistake 6
Plywood for every long span
Long shelves and loft bases in 18 mm plywood can sag. Fix: use 25 mm blockboard or add a support. See blockboard price.
Mistake 7
Poor site storage
Sheets leaned on a damp wall or left on a wet floor bow and absorb moisture before they are cut. Fix: store flat, off the floor on battens, under cover and away from fresh plaster.
Mistake 8
Unsealed edges, one-sided laminate
Water enters at raw edges, and panels laminated on one face cup. Fix: edge-band every exposed edge and use a balancing laminate on the back.
Mistake 9
No bill, no batch record
Without a GST bill naming brand and grade, there is no warranty claim when a board fails. Fix: buy from an authorised dealer and file the bill with the job.
Mistake 10
Ordering without a cutting list
Guessing sheet counts means mid-job shortfalls, a second delivery and mixed lots. Fix: make a cutting list and use the plywood quantity calculator.
Pre-Order Checklist for Every Job
| Check | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Grade by zone | BWP for kitchen base, bathroom, balcony and damp walls; MR for dry rooms |
| Thickness by part | 18 mm carcass and shutters, 12 mm shelves, 6–9 mm backs and drawer bottoms |
| Certification | IS:710 or IS:303 mark, brand name and batch number on the sheet |
| Quantity | Cutting list plus 10–15% wastage, whole job ordered together |
| Laminate | Batch numbers matched per room; inner or balancing laminate included |
| Edge band | Colour and thickness matched to the laminate, enough for every exposed edge |
| Delivery and storage | Covered, dry place on site to stack sheets flat |
| Paperwork | GST bill with brand, grade, thickness and quantity |
What a Wrong Grade Really Costs
On a 10 ft kitchen, using commercial plywood instead of marine BWP for the 8 sheets of 18 mm saves about ₹11,500 at our rates. If the sink base swells in two years, the free repair costs your labour, new board, new laminate and hardware, and the client tells their neighbours. The right grade is the cheapest insurance a contractor can buy. Full costs are in kitchen cabinet cost.
Spotting Bad Board Before It Reaches Site
Knock across the face for hollow spots, check the edge for gaps and overlaps, lift a corner to feel the weight, and sight along the edge for warping. The full check is in how to spot fake plywood. Monsoon-specific problems are in monsoon problems with cheap plywood.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most common plywood mistake contractors make?
Using one grade for the whole job. MR plywood under sinks, in bathrooms or on damp walls fails first. Specify BWP (IS:710) for wet zones and MR for dry rooms.
How do I check if plywood thickness is correct?
Measure a few sheets from every lot at several points with a vernier caliper. A genuine board should be within about half a millimetre of its stated thickness.
How should plywood be stored on site?
Stack sheets flat on battens off the floor, under cover, away from wet walls and fresh plaster. Do not lean them against a wall for days.
Why should I order the whole job at once?
Sheets and laminates from different batches can vary slightly in thickness, face and shade. One order keeps the job consistent and avoids a second delivery.
Do you give contractor or bulk rates?
Yes. Orders of 10 sheets or more get better rates, with delivery to site across Ahmedabad. WhatsApp 8460783619 with your cutting list.
Why do I need a GST bill for plywood?
The bill naming brand, grade and thickness is your proof for any warranty claim and shows the client what was supplied.
When should I use blockboard instead of plywood?
Use 19 or 25 mm blockboard for long shelves, loft bases and tall shutters where 18 mm plywood might sag over the span.
