Plywood Guide · Wardrobe Thickness
What Plywood Thickness Is Best for a Wardrobe?
A good wardrobe uses three or four thicknesses, not one. The sides, top, bottom and full-height shutters need 18 mm (or 19 mm) to stay square and flat for years. Shelves and loft shutters can drop to 12 mm, and the back to 6 mm. Here is the part-by-part guide, whether 12 mm is enough, and what each option costs at our Lati Bazar store.
Wardrobe Plywood Thickness Chart
| Wardrobe part | Thickness | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Side panels | 18–19 mm | Carry the full load and hold hinge screws |
| Top and bottom | 18 mm | Keep the box square; the bottom carries weight |
| Vertical dividers | 18 mm | Support shelves and hanging rods |
| Full-height hinged shutters | 18 mm | Resist warping over 6–7 ft; carry mirrors |
| Short and loft shutters | 12–16 mm | Lighter; less height to warp |
| Shelves up to about 2.5 ft | 12 mm | Enough for clothes; saves weight and cost |
| Shelves longer than 2.5–3 ft, loft base | 18–19 mm | Stops sagging under blankets and luggage |
| Drawer sides and fronts | 12 mm | Holds drawer channels firmly |
| Drawer bottoms | 6–9 mm | Light load |
| Back panel | 6 mm (8–9 mm for large units) | Squares the carcass; no structural load |
Sliding wardrobes use 18 mm for the carcass and 16–18 mm for the sliding panels, depending on the track. For the grade to use, see best plywood for wardrobes.

What the Thickness Choice Costs
Take a 3-door wardrobe, 6 ft wide, 7 ft tall and 2 ft deep, with four shelves per section, in MR grade and allowing 12% cutting wastage:
| Approach | Sheets | Plywood cost | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mixed (recommended) | 4 × 18 mm, 2 × 12 mm, 2 × 6 mm | ₹15,744 | Strong where it matters, lighter elsewhere |
| All 18 mm | 7 × 18 mm | ₹16,576 | Heavier, little extra benefit |
| All 12 mm | 7 × 12 mm | ₹13,440 | Saves about ₹2,300 but shutters warp and sides flex |
The mixed approach costs only a little more than cutting corners and avoids the most common wardrobe complaints: shutters that bow, doors that stop closing flush and shelves that dip in the middle. Plywood is usually a smaller share of the wardrobe bill than laminate, hardware and labour, so saving on thickness saves less than it seems. Is 12 mm Plywood Good for Wardrobes?
For some parts, yes. 12 mm is right for shelves up to about 2.5 ft wide carrying folded clothes, drawer sides, loft shutters and short cabinet doors. 12 mm is wrong for side panels (hinge screws loosen and the box racks), full-height shutters (a 7 ft, 12 mm shutter bows within a season or two) and long loft shelves loaded with blankets and suitcases.
18 mm or 19 mm?
Both are standard for wardrobe carcasses. 19 mm adds a little stiffness for long loft shelves and heavy storage; 18 mm is the more common plywood size and suits most homes. If you want extra stiffness on long spans, blockboard for wardrobes in 19 mm or 25 mm is another good option.
Grade Matters as Much as Thickness
In a dry bedroom, commercial or MR grade is enough. If the wardrobe stands against a bathroom wall or an outer wall that gets monsoon damp, use marine plywood for the wardrobe, at least for the back and the bottom. Finish both faces of shutters with laminate, 1 mm outside and 0.8 mm inner laminate inside, so they stay flat. Designs are in wardrobe laminates. Frequently Asked Questions
What thickness of plywood is best for a wardrobe?
Use 18 mm (or 19 mm) for the sides, top, bottom, dividers and full-height shutters, 12 mm for shelves up to about 2.5 ft and drawer sides, and 6 mm for the back.
Is 12 mm plywood good for wardrobes?
12 mm is good for shelves up to about 2.5 ft, drawer sides and loft shutters. It is not strong enough for side panels or full-height shutters, which bow and loosen hinges over time.
Which thickness of plywood is used for wardrobe shutters?
Full-height hinged shutters of 6 to 7 ft should be 18 mm to resist warping. Short and loft shutters can be 12 to 16 mm.
What thickness is the back panel of a wardrobe?
6 mm is standard for wardrobe backs. Use 8 or 9 mm for very large wardrobes, and marine grade if the wall behind gets damp.
How many plywood sheets are needed for a 3-door wardrobe?
A 6 x 7 x 2 ft wardrobe needs about 4 sheets of 18 mm, 2 of 12 mm and 2 of 6 mm with 12% wastage. Lofts and drawers add more.
What is the plywood cost for a 6 x 7 ft wardrobe?
In MR grade at Samta Plywood rates, the plywood for a 6 x 7 x 2 ft wardrobe is about ₹15,744 before GST. Laminate, hardware and labour are extra.
Is 18 mm or 19 mm plywood better for a wardrobe?
Both work for the carcass. 19 mm is slightly stiffer for long loft shelves carrying heavy storage; 18 mm is more common and suits most wardrobes.
