Plywood Buying Guide — Grades, Core Types and Best Sources
Everything you need to know before buying plywood in Ahmedabad — from a dealer who has been supplying carpenters and homeowners since 1980. Updated April 2026.
The Three Ways to Categorize Plywood
Most buyers only know plywood by brand name — Greenply, CenturyPly. But to make the right decision, you need to understand three different ways plywood is categorized: by grade, by core material, and by where it is sourced from.
By Grade
The grade tells you how the plywood handles moisture. There are three grades:
- MR Grade / BWR Grade — These are the same grade, just two different names. Moisture Resistant. Handles moderate humidity.
- BWP Grade — Boiling Water Proof. Fully waterproof. Also called Marine plywood.
- Commercial Grade — Basic grade. No moisture resistance. Dry areas only.
By Core Material & Face
The core is what is inside the plywood. Three types:
- Popular — White core throughout. Budget option.
- Alternate — Red and white alternating layers. Best value.
- Gurjan — Red and red core. Premium quality.
The outer face veneer can be either Okumo face or Gurjan face.
By Source (Ahmedabad-Specific)
Especially in Ahmedabad, where the plywood comes from directly affects quality and price:
- South India — Cheaper. Budget tier.
- Yamunanagar — Best quality in India (as of April 2026).
- Gujarat Local — Also budget tier, similar to South.
What Is Inside Your Plywood? Core Types Explained
The core is the most important part of any plywood. It determines strength, durability and how long the furniture will last. Here is what each core type looks like in cross-section.
Cut plywood showing popular (white), alternate (red and white) and gurjan (red and red with white layers) core types side by side — Samta Plywood Centre, Lati Bazar, Ahmedabad.
Popular Core — White Throughout
Popular core plywood has white softwood throughout all inner layers. It is lightweight and the most affordable option. Commonly used in budget plywood from South India and Gujarat local manufacturers.
Suitable for temporary furniture, rental properties and low-use applications where cost is the priority.
Alternate Core — Red and White
Alternate core plywood has alternating red hardwood and white softwood layers inside. The red wood adds strength and durability that popular core cannot match.
This is the most recommended core for everyday use — good balance of price, strength and longevity. Yamunanagar MR Alternate is the standard choice for quality furniture in Ahmedabad.
Gurjan Core — Red and Red
Gurjan core plywood has red hardwood throughout. It is the strongest and most durable core type available.
However, a fully red core has one weakness — when a screw or nail is driven in, the dense red wood can crack or split. To prevent this, quality gurjan plywood always contains two white core layers inside the red core. These white layers act as a buffer and absorb the pressure when hardware is applied.
Where Is the Plywood Sourced From?
In Ahmedabad, the single most important question you can ask your plywood supplier is: where is this material from? The source directly determines quality, price and how long your furniture will last.
Most suppliers in Ahmedabad will not volunteer this information. You have to ask specifically — "Is this South material, Yamunanagar material, or Gujarat manufactured?" The answer will tell you everything about what you are actually buying.
South India Plywood
Plywood manufactured in South India (primarily Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh) is cheaper than Yamunanagar material. It is widely available in Ahmedabad and used in budget projects.
South plywood is a practical choice when cost is the priority. Do not expect the same durability as Yamunanagar material.
Yamunanagar Plywood
Yamunanagar in Haryana is India's largest and most established plywood manufacturing hub. As of April 2026, it produces the highest quality plywood available in India — better raw material, better manufacturing consistency, and better durability than any other source.
For medium to high budget projects — home furniture, kitchen shutters, office interiors — Yamunanagar is always the right choice. Brands like Greenply and CenturyPly source their core material from Yamunanagar.
Gujarat Local Manufacturing
Plywood manufactured locally in Gujarat is available at competitive prices, similar in tier to South India material. It is a budget option often used for low-cost residential and commercial projects.
While convenient for local procurement, Gujarat local material generally does not match Yamunanagar quality for durability and consistency.
Which Plywood Should You Buy?
Based on 45 years of supplying plywood in Ahmedabad, here is our straightforward recommendation by budget.
South Plywood — Popular or Alternate Core
If cost is the primary constraint, South plywood is the right choice. It is affordable, widely available and will serve its purpose for the expected duration. Good for temporary setups, rental properties or projects where longevity is not critical.
Ask your supplier specifically for South MR Alternate if you want the best within this budget tier.
Expected life: up to 10 yearsYamunanagar MR Alternate Plywood
This is what we recommend to most customers. Yamunanagar MR Alternate plywood offers the best value for money available — moisture resistant, strong alternate core, and a life of up to 25 years. It is the standard choice for quality home furniture, wardrobes, kitchen shutters and office interiors across Ahmedabad.
Brands: Greenply, CenturyPly, Royal Touch — all available in Yamunanagar MR Alternate.
Expected life: up to 25 yearsGurjan Face, Red and Red Core — Yamunanagar
For the absolute best quality available in the market, choose gurjan face plywood with red and red core from Yamunanagar. This is the premium tier — maximum strength, best surface finish, longest life. Preferred for high-end residential projects, commercial interiors and wherever quality is non-negotiable.
Ensure the plywood has two white layers inside the red core — this is the mark of quality gurjan plywood.
