Why It Happens

Moisture Imbalance

If one face of a sheet absorbs more moisture than the other — from uneven exposure or a damp wall behind it — the sheet expands unevenly and bends toward the drier side.

Improper Storage

Sheets stored flat on an uneven surface, leaned at an angle for long periods, or stacked without support across their full length are common causes of permanent bending.

Uneven Load or Pressure

Weight concentrated on one section of an unsupported span — a shelf overloaded in the middle, for example — can cause gradual bowing over time.

Manufacturing Quality

Inconsistent veneer thickness or uneven pressing during manufacturing can leave a sheet more prone to bending even under normal conditions.

Warp, Bow, Cup & Twist

Warp is a general curving along the sheet's length. Bow curves along the length specifically, usually from uneven support. Cup curves across the width, most often from moisture imbalance between faces. Twist is a diagonal distortion where one corner lifts out of plane — usually the most difficult to correct.

Preventing & Fixing It

Store sheets flat, fully supported, and away from direct sun or damp walls. Seal exposed edges to slow uneven moisture absorption. Choose a higher grade (BWR or BWP) for rooms with humidity swings, since dimensional stability is one of the real advantages that grade offers over MR. Minor bowing can sometimes be corrected by weighting a sheet flat in a controlled, moderately humid environment for several days — significant warping or twisting, however, usually means the sheet should be replaced.
