Why Countertops Are the Least Forgiving Surface for Plywood
A countertop takes more punishment per square foot than almost any other surface in the home — constant water contact, knife marks, hot vessels set down without a trivet, spilled oil and regular scrubbing with cleaning chemicals. This combination rules out anything but the highest waterproof grade of plywood, finished properly and sealed at every edge.
Plywood countertops are most common as secondary work surfaces — bar tops, breakfast counters, utility counters and laundry counters — where a wood-look laminate finish is wanted at a lower cost than granite or quartz. For the primary kitchen work surface facing daily knife and heat contact, we still recommend granite or quartz; plywood's role there is usually the substructure the counter sits on, not the visible top surface.
