What Is HPL Laminate? How High Pressure Laminates Are Made

Almost every decorative laminate sold for furniture in India is HPL, or high pressure laminate. Knowing what goes inside a sheet and how it is pressed explains why HPL is tough, why thickness matters, and how to tell a good sheet from a poor one.

HPL in One Paragraph

High pressure laminate (HPL) is a rigid decorative sheet made by stacking resin-soaked papers and pressing them at high temperature and very high pressure until the resins cure and the layers fuse into a single solid sheet. It is then glued onto plywood, MDF or particle board. "Laminate" and "sunmica" in everyday Indian use almost always mean HPL.

The Layers of an HPL Sheet

1. Overlay (top)

A thin, transparent paper soaked in melamine resin. Once cured it becomes the hard, clear wear layer that resists scratches, stains and heat.

2. Decor paper

The printed or solid-colour paper that gives the design: woodgrain, marble, fabric or plain colour. It is also melamine-impregnated.

3. Kraft core

Several sheets of brown kraft paper soaked in phenolic resin. They give the sheet its strength and thickness. More kraft layers make a thicker sheet.

That is why most laminate edges look brown or black when cut. It is the phenolic kraft core showing. The back of the sheet is sanded rough so adhesive grips it.

How Laminates Are Made, Step by Step

Step 1

Impregnation

Rolls of kraft paper run through phenolic resin baths; decor and overlay papers run through melamine resin.

Step 2

Drying & cutting

The soaked papers are dried in long ovens to a set resin and moisture content, then cut to sheet size.

Step 3

Stacking

Kraft sheets, decor paper and overlay are stacked between steel press plates. The plate's surface (mirror, matte or textured) sets the final finish.

Step 4

Pressing

A multi-daylight hydraulic press applies high heat and pressure for a set cycle, so the resins flow, cure and fuse the stack into one sheet.

Step 5

Cooling & trimming

Sheets are cooled under pressure to stay flat, then trimmed to 8 × 4 ft and other sizes.

Step 6

Sanding & QC

The back is sanded for glue grip, and sheets are checked for thickness, surface defects and shade before packing.

How to Check HPL Quality

Thickness

Measure it

A 1 mm sheet should measure close to 1 mm at several points. Thin, uneven sheets chip and crack. See the size & thickness guide.

Surface

Look at it under light

No dots, streaks, dull patches or waviness. Gloss should reflect straight lines cleanly.

Flatness

Lay it down

A good sheet lies flat. Heavy warping points to poor pressing or storage.

Back

Check the branding

Reputed brands print their name and design number on the sanded back, which helps you reorder the same shade.

Standard

Ask about IS 2046

IS 2046 is the Indian standard for decorative laminated sheets. Major brands test to it, and many also to the European EN 438.

Batch

Buy together

Order all sheets for one room at once so the shade and texture match.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is HPL laminate?

HPL, or high pressure laminate, is a decorative sheet made by pressing a melamine overlay, a decor paper and phenolic kraft layers under high heat and pressure until they fuse into one hard sheet.

Is HPL the same as sunmica?

Yes. In India, sunmica and laminate are common names for decorative HPL sheets.

What is the difference between HPL and LPL?

HPL is a separate sheet pressed at high pressure and glued onto any board. LPL is decor paper fused directly onto MDF or particle board at low pressure. HPL is more durable and offers more designs.

Is HPL waterproof?

The HPL surface resists water well, but the board under it and the joints do not. In wet areas, use BWP plywood and seal all edges.

Which Indian standard applies to decorative laminates?

IS 2046 is the Indian standard for decorative thermosetting synthetic resin bonded laminated sheets. Many brands also test to the European EN 438 standard.
