Pre-Laminated Plywood
Pre-laminated plywood comes with a finished surface on both faces, so there is no pasting or pressing on site. Here is how melamine and HPL faces differ, how prelam compares with plywood plus laminate on cost and time, and where it works best.
What Is Pre-Laminated Plywood?
Pre-laminated (prelam) plywood is plywood that leaves the factory with a decorative surface already fused to both faces. Most prelam boards use melamine-impregnated décor paper, hot-pressed straight onto the plywood, so the paper and resin become part of the board. Some premium boards are pressed with a thin HPL instead. Either way, your carpenter cuts, edge-bands and assembles. There is no buying laminate, no pasting, no pressing and no waiting for glue.
It is the plywood twin of pre-laminated MDF: the same idea, but with plywood's better screw holding and lighter weight, and with water resistance depending on the plywood grade underneath.
Melamine vs HPL Lamination
| Factor | Melamine-faced (most prelam) | HPL-faced / 1 mm laminate |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Resin-soaked décor paper fused to the board | A thick, multi-layer high-pressure sheet |
| Thickness of surface | Very thin | About 0.8–1 mm |
| Scratch and impact | Fine for light use | Much tougher |
| Design range | The factory's range, mostly solids and woodgrains | Hundreds of designs, textures and special grades |
| Best for | Carcasses, insides, shelves, office storage | Shutters, table tops, kitchen fronts |

Prelam Plywood vs Plywood + Laminate
| Factor | Prelam plywood | 18 mm MR plywood + laminate on site |
|---|---|---|
| Material, one 8 × 4 sheet | Rate on request by design and grade | ₹2,368 ply + ₹485 inner + ₹485 inner = ₹3,338 (both faces inner) or ₹2,368 + ₹1,210 decorative + ₹485 inner = ₹4,063 |
| Site labour | Cut, edge-band, assemble | Paste, press, trim, then assemble |
| Time | Fastest | Extra day or more per batch |
| Finish | Perfectly even, no bubbles | Depends on carpenter and press |
| Design choice | Limited | Any laminate |

Best Uses for Pre-Laminated Plywood
Great
Wardrobe insides and carcasses
Clean, wipeable surfaces inside without buying separate inner laminate. Best plywood for wardrobes.
Good
Shelves and lofts
Finished both sides with no extra work.
Careful
Kitchens
Use a BWP-grade prelam for carcasses and 1 mm laminate on shutters; keep the sink base in BWP plywood.
Avoid
Shutters and table tops that take wear
Melamine is thin; use 1 mm HPL on surfaces that get knocked, scrubbed or written on.
Buying Tips
Check the grade underneath. Prelam is only as water-resistant as its core, so ask whether it is MR or BWP. Edge-band every edge with matching PVC tape; the melamine face stops at the edge. See edge banding. Use sharp, fine-tooth blades with a scoring cut so the melamine doesn't chip. Order matching edge band and screw caps with the boards. Store flat with the protective sheets in place until fitting. Mix wisely: prelam for carcasses and insides, 1 mm decorative laminate on shutters. It is a common, cost-effective combination for modular wardrobes.
Compared with MDF and particle board: prelam plywood holds screws better and is lighter than prelam MDF; prelam particle board is cheapest but weakest with water. See plywood vs MDF vs particle board.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is pre-laminated plywood?
Plywood with a decorative surface, usually melamine-impregnated paper, fused to both faces at the factory, ready to cut, edge-band and assemble.
Is prelam plywood better than plywood with laminate?
It is faster and gives a perfectly even finish, and saves labour. Plywood with 1 mm laminate offers far more designs and a tougher surface for shutters and table tops.
What is the difference between melamine and HPL lamination?
Melamine is a very thin resin-paper layer fused to the board; HPL is a thick, high-pressure laminate sheet about 0.8–1 mm thick that is much more scratch and impact resistant.
Is pre-laminated plywood waterproof?
Only as water-resistant as its core. Choose a BWP-grade prelam for humid or kitchen use, edge-band every edge, and keep sink bases in BWP plywood.
Where should prelam plywood be used?
Wardrobe insides and carcasses, office storage and workstations, shop units, shelves and lofts. Use 1 mm laminate on shutters and surfaces that take heavy wear.
How do I stop prelam plywood chipping when cutting?
Use a sharp, fine-tooth blade with a scoring cut, and keep the protective sheet on until fitting.
