Solid Core vs Hollow Core Flush Doors: Which Should You Buy?

Two flush doors can look identical once laminated, yet one feels solid and quiet while the other rattles, dents and swells. The difference is inside: a solid core of tightly packed wooden battens, or a hollow frame filled with honeycomb paper or widely spaced strips. Here is how they compare, and which to choose for each door in your home.

Solid core flush door

The inside is filled edge to edge with wooden battens (usually pine), bonded and pressed between plywood or veneer faces, like a blockboard. Heavy, strong, quiet, and holds hinges, locks and handles firmly.

Hollow core flush door

A timber frame around the edge, with a honeycomb paper grid or spaced strips inside, covered by thin skins. Light and cheap, but weak between the supports and poor at blocking sound.

Which Core for Which Door

Main door: always solid core, 35 mm BWP, for security, weight and weather. Bathroom and kitchen: solid core BWP, 32 mm; a hollow core door near a wet floor soaks up water through the bottom edge and swells. Bedroom: solid core MR, 30 mm, for privacy and quiet. Store room, cupboard, temporary partition: hollow core can be acceptable if budget matters and the door sees little use.

How to Tell Them Apart at the Shop

Knock across the face. Solid core sounds even and dull; hollow core sounds drummy between the frame members. Lift one end. A solid core 7 × 3 ft door is far heavier. Look at the edge. A solid door shows continuous battens; a hollow one shows a frame strip with a gap or paper behind it. Ask for the core on the bill. A reputable seller will write the core type and grade.

Double Core and Pine Mix

Within solid-core doors there are grades. Pine mix cores combine pine with other timbers and suit budget internal doors. Double core, 100% pine uses two layers of pine battens for a flatter, stronger door that resists warping. For wet areas, the BWP grade matters more than the core pattern. Finishing Either Door

Laminate or veneer both faces so the door stays straight, and seal the top and bottom edges with paint or edge banding, especially on bathroom doors. Designs are in door laminates. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between solid core and hollow core flush doors?

A solid core flush door is filled with tightly packed wooden battens, so it is heavy, strong and quiet. A hollow core door has a frame with honeycomb paper or spaced strips inside, so it is light and cheap but weak and noisy.

Which is better, solid core or hollow core?

Solid core is better for almost every home door: main, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. Hollow core only makes sense for light-use internal doors on a tight budget.

Are hollow core doors good for bathrooms?

No. Water soaks in through the bottom edge and the core can swell or collapse. Use a 32 mm solid core BWP flush door for bathrooms.

What is the price of a solid core flush door in Ahmedabad?

At Samta Plywood Centre, solid core flush doors range from ₹101 per sq ft (30 mm MR pine mix) to ₹184 per sq ft (Kitply 30 mm BWP). A 7 x 3 ft door costs about ₹2,121 to ₹3,864 before GST and freight.

How can I check if a flush door is solid core?

Knock across the face (solid sounds even and dull), lift one end (solid is much heavier) and look at the edge for continuous battens. Ask for the core type on the bill.

Is a double core flush door better?

Yes. Double core, 100% pine doors use two layers of battens, which makes them flatter, stronger and less likely to warp than single or pine-mix cores.

Can a hollow core door be used as a main door?

No. It offers little security or weather resistance. Main doors should be 35 mm solid core BWP flush doors or solid wood.
