Veneer Polish: PU vs Melamine vs NC vs Duco
The finish decides how veneer looks on day one and after five monsoons, and it can cost as much as the veneer. Here is how PU, melamine, NC lacquer and duco compare, which to use where, and what to ask your polisher.
The Polish Decides How Your Veneer Ages
Veneer is real wood, and real wood needs a finish to protect it from stains, water marks, scratches and sunlight. The finish you choose decides how the grain looks on day one and how it looks after five monsoons. It can also cost as much as the veneer itself. In Ahmedabad, carpenters and polishers mostly offer three clear finishes, PU, melamine and NC lacquer, plus duco when you want to paint over the wood instead of showing it.
Here is how they compare, which to use where, and what to ask your polisher. For maintenance re-polishing of existing furniture, see how to polish plywood.

Choosing a Finish Room by Room
PU
Main doors and dining tables
Hands, heat, spills and sun. PU's toughness pays off. Veneer door designs.
PU
Kitchen veneer shutters
Steam and grease need the most resistant clear finish. Consider laminate for daily-use bases.
Melamine
Wardrobes and bed-backs
Good protection at a lower cost where there is little water or heat.
Melamine
Wall panelling
Large, low-touch areas where cost per sq ft matters.
NC
Low-use furniture
Display units and decorative pieces that may need touch-ups.
Duco
Painted look
When you want a solid colour, usually on MDF; on veneer it hides the grain you paid for.
What a Good Polish Job Includes
1. Sanding with progressively finer grits along the grain; recon veneer needs a light hand because its dyed layers are thin. 2. Filler or sealer to close the pores for a smooth finish (skip the filler for an open-pore look). 3. Optional stain, tested on an offcut from the same bundle first. 4. Sealer coat, sanded smooth. 5. Top coats (usually two or more), sprayed for the best result, with sanding between coats. 6. Curing time before the furniture is used hard; PU especially needs full curing.
Questions to ask your polisher
Which product and grade (two-component PU, melamine, NC)? Non-yellowing or standard? How many sealer and top coats? Sprayed or brushed? Sanding between coats? Matte, satin or gloss, and can I see a sample board? How long before I can use it? A clear answer to each is the best sign of a polisher who will do it properly.
Veneer or laminate?
If upkeep worries you, compare the full finished cost: veneer plus polish plus labour, against laminate, which is finished the moment it is pasted. See veneer vs laminate, veneer door vs laminate door and laminate vs paint. Veneer types and how they take polish: smoked veneer, recon veneer and teak veneer. Prices: veneer sheet price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which polish is best for veneer?
PU (polyurethane) gives the hardest, most water- and heat-resistant clear finish and suits doors, tables and kitchens. Melamine is a good mid-cost option for wardrobes and panelling. NC lacquer is cheaper and easy to touch up but less durable.
PU or melamine polish: which lasts longer?
PU lasts longer and resists water, stains and heat better. Melamine costs less and is fine for low-touch surfaces.
Does PU polish turn yellow?
Good non-yellowing PU grades stay clear for years. Cheaper finishes, especially NC lacquer, tend to amber with age.
Can I paint over veneer with duco?
You can, but duco is opaque and hides the grain you paid for. For a solid colour, MDF with duco or PU paint is usually the better base.
How many coats of polish does veneer need?
A sealer coat plus at least two top coats, sanded between coats and sprayed for the best result.
