Plywood for Balconies: Seating, Storage Ideas and the Right Grade
A balcony gets sun, dust, monsoon spray and humid nights, so it is harder on furniture than any room inside. The right plywood, sealed properly, turns it into useful space: a bench with storage, a washing-machine cabinet, a fold-down table or a planter wall. Here are the ideas that work in Ahmedabad balconies, the grade to use, and what it costs.
Plywood Ideas for Balconies
Bench with storage
A low bench along the parapet with a lift-up lid or drawers for cushions, tools and plant supplies. The most useful balcony build.
Washing-machine cabinet
A tall unit around the machine with shelves above for detergent and a pull-out for clothes pegs. Keep a gap behind for pipes and air.
Fold-down table
A wall-mounted top that folds flat when not in use, ideal for tea for two in a narrow balcony. See plywood folding table designs.
Planter shelves and wall
Tiered shelves or a slatted wall for pots. Use plastic liners and trays so wet soil never touches the board.
Shoe and utility cabinet
A closed cabinet for shoes, a broom or a small toolkit, with ventilation holes or louvres to stop smells and damp.
Bar or breakfast counter
A narrow counter along the railing with stools, for balconies with a view. Top it with high-scratch laminate.
Best Plywood and Finish for a Balcony
| Part | Board | Finish |
|---|---|---|
| Bench and cabinet body | 18 mm marine BWP | Laminate outside, inner laminate inside |
| Shutters and lids | 12–18 mm marine BWP | Laminate on both faces |
| Shelves | 18 mm BWP | Laminate both faces, sealed front edge |
| Backs | 6–9 mm BWP | Inner laminate; keep a gap from the wall |
| Base / plinth | BWP on plastic or steel legs | Sealed; lifted 2–3 in off the floor |
| Table tops | 18 mm BWP | High-scratch or matte laminate |
Marine BWP (IS:710) is the only plywood grade we recommend for balconies. MR and commercial board swell after one monsoon. Rates: 710 plywood price · 18 mm marine · 12 mm marine. Grade basics: commercial vs marine plywood.
How Much Weather Your Balcony Gets
Covered balcony
BWP + laminate works well
A roof or the floor above keeps rain off. Laminated BWP plywood with sealed edges lasts many years.
Partly open
BWP, set back from the edge
Keep furniture away from the rail where rain blows in, and choose matte laminates that do not show water marks.
Open terrace
Not ideal for plywood
Direct rain and full sun are hard even on BWP. Use it only under a pergola or awning, with an exterior finish. See plywood for outdoor use.
What a Balcony Bench Costs
A 5 ft long, 1.5 ft deep, 1.5 ft high storage bench needs about 35 sq ft of board, or 2 sheets of 18 mm marine BWP with cutting wastage (₹7,040). Add one sheet of 1 mm laminate for the outside (from ₹1,210 in Aroma or Phenolam SF) and one inner laminate (from ₹485). That is about ₹8,735 in board and laminate before GST, plus hinges, cushions and labour. Laminate rates by brand are on the laminate price list.
Making Balcony Furniture Last
Seal every edge. Water gets into plywood through cut edges, not the face; edge-band or laminate them all, including the bottom. Lift it off the floor. Plastic or steel legs keep the base out of mopping water. Leave an air gap of 1–2 in behind cabinets against the wall. Laminate both faces of every panel so it stays flat through humid months. Use stainless or coated hardware; plain steel hinges rust fast outdoors. Keep pots on trays, never directly on the board. More in monsoon problems with cheap plywood.
Choosing Laminate for a Balcony
Matte, suede and textured laminates hide dust and water spots better than gloss. Light woodgrains and stone designs stay cooler in sun than dark shades. See textured laminates and woodgrain laminates.
