Plywood for Headboards: Designs, Sizes, Thickness and Cost
A headboard is the easiest way to make a bedroom feel finished, and plywood is the most versatile base for one. It takes laminate, veneer, fluting, padding or paint, carries side tables and lights, and can hide wiring. Here are headboard designs, the right sizes for Indian beds, which thickness to use, and what the board and laminate cost at our Lati Bazar store.
Popular Plywood Headboard Designs
Laminate panel
A clean panel in woodgrain, suede or solid colour laminate. The most durable and easy-care option. Ideas in bedroom laminates (see also bedroom wall design).
Fluted headboard
Vertical flutes make the room feel taller. Use fluted laminate on plywood, or CNC-routed HDHMR for deep grooves. See fluted laminates.
Upholstered (padded)
Foam and fabric on a 12 mm plywood base, framed with a laminate or veneer border. Comfortable for sitting up in bed.
Veneer or wood look
Natural veneer or a textured woodgrain laminate for a warm, premium look. See woodgrain laminates.
Floor-to-ceiling feature wall
A full-height panel behind the bed, often with side panels and a lighting cove. Uses 9–12 mm plywood on battens. See wall laminates.
Storage headboard
A shallow shelf or cabinet unit behind the bed for books, phones and a reading light, built in 18 mm plywood.
Headboard Size for Indian Beds
Width usually matches the bed or extends 3–6 in on each side. Height is from the floor.
| Bed | Bed size | Headboard width | Headboard height |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 3 × 6.25 ft | 3–3.5 ft | 3–4 ft |
| Queen | 5 × 6.5 ft | 5–5.5 ft | 3.5–4.5 ft |
| King | 6 × 6.5 ft | 6–6.5 ft | 3.5–4.5 ft |
| Feature wall | Any | Bed width + side tables | Floor to ceiling |
A king or queen headboard up to 4 ft tall fits on one 8 × 4 ft sheet laid sideways, which keeps it joint-free.
Which Plywood Thickness for a Headboard?
Freestanding or bed-fixed
18 mm
Stays rigid when you lean back and holds bolts to the bed frame.
Wall-mounted panel
12 mm
Fixed to the wall on battens or a French cleat; lighter to handle.
Padded base
12 mm
Holds staples and foam well without extra weight.
Full feature wall
9–12 mm on battens
Covers large areas without overloading the wall.
MR grade suits most bedrooms. Use marine BWP if the wall behind gets damp or shares a bathroom. More on thickness in plywood thickness for furniture.
What a Plywood Headboard Costs
For a king-size laminate headboard about 6.5 × 4 ft (26 sq ft), you need one 8 × 4 ft sheet of 18 mm MR plywood (₹2,368), one sheet of 1 mm decorative laminate for the front (from ₹1,210 in Aroma or Phenolam SF) and a balancing laminate for the back (from ₹485 in Durian Espania inner). That comes to about ₹4,063 in board and laminate before GST, plus edge banding and labour.
A fluted or premium-brand laminate costs more; a padded design swaps the laminate for foam and fabric on 12 mm plywood (₹1,920 a sheet in MR). Brand rates are on the laminate price list and plywood rates on the plywood price list.
Tips for a Headboard That Lasts
Laminate both faces, even the hidden back, so the panel does not bow. Round or edge-band the top edge, which takes the most knocks. Plan wiring first: cut openings for switches, USB points and reading lights before laminating. Pick an easy-care finish: matte, suede or textured laminates hide hair oil and fingerprints; see matte laminates. Fix it securely with a French cleat or bolts through the bed frame so it never rattles.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which plywood is best for a headboard?
MR grade plywood suits most bedrooms. Use 18 mm for a freestanding or bed-fixed headboard, and 12 mm for a wall-mounted or padded panel. Choose marine BWP if the wall behind is damp.
What size should a headboard be for a king bed?
For a 6 x 6.5 ft king bed, make the headboard 6 to 6.5 ft wide and 3.5 to 4.5 ft tall from the floor, or extend it into a full feature wall with the side tables.
How much does a plywood headboard cost?
A king-size laminate headboard needs about ₹4,063 in board and laminate at our store: one sheet of 18 mm MR plywood, one 1 mm laminate and one balancing laminate, before GST and labour.
Can I make a fluted headboard with plywood?
Yes. Apply fluted laminate on plywood for a shallow rib, or use CNC-routed HDHMR or MDF for deep grooves, then finish with laminate, veneer or paint.
What thickness of plywood is used for a padded headboard?
12 mm plywood is ideal. It holds staples and foam well, and it is light enough to wall-mount.
Which laminate is best for a headboard?
Matte, suede and textured woodgrain laminates are the most popular because they hide hair oil and fingerprints. Fluted laminate is the favourite for a feature look.
Should a headboard be fixed to the bed or the wall?
Either works. Wall-mounting on a French cleat avoids rattling and lets you change the bed later. Bolting to the bed frame suits freestanding beds.
