Moulded Skin Doors

Moulded skin doors give the classic panelled look at a fraction of the cost of solid wood. Here is how they are built, how they compare with flush and solid panel doors, where they work and where they don't, and tougher ways to get the same look.

What Is a Moulded Skin Door?

A moulded skin door, also called a moulded panel door or membrane-style door, looks like a classic panelled wooden door, with raised or recessed panels, but it is built like a flush door. Two thin HDF (high-density fibreboard) skins are pressed in a mould to create the panel pattern, then bonded to a timber frame with a filled or honeycomb core. The skins usually come primer-coated, ready to paint on site, and some have a wood-grain texture or a veneer face.

The result is the panelled look at a fraction of the cost and weight of a solid wood panel door. The trade-off is that it is an indoor, dry-area door: the HDF skin does not like water, and a deep knock can crack a moulded panel.

Want the Panel Look Without a Moulded Door?

There are three tougher ways to get a panelled or designed door from the materials we stock. 1. A flush door with CNC grooves routed into the face, then painted or laminated. It is solid-core, strong and available in any pattern. 2. A flush door with applied mouldings, where beading or MDF profiles are fixed to the face to create panels, then painted. 3. A laminated or veneered flush door with a two-tone or grooved design. Ideas: flush door designs, MDF door designs and veneer door designs. Buying a moulded door: what to check

Skin thickness and density. Press the panel centre; it should not flex. The core. Solid or semi-solid cores feel and sound better than hollow honeycomb. The frame. It should be seasoned, treated timber so hinges and locks hold. The primer. It should be even with no raised fibres. And ask whether the door can be trimmed to your opening, since moulded doors have limited trimming allowance at the edges. Size guidance is in the door size chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a moulded skin door?

A door with two pressed HDF skins, moulded to look like a panelled door, bonded to a timber frame and core. It usually comes primer-coated, ready to paint.

Are moulded skin doors waterproof?

No. The HDF skin does not tolerate water, so use moulded doors only in dry rooms. For bathrooms use a BWP flush door or a WPC door.

Moulded door vs flush door: which is better?

A moulded door gives a classic panel look cheaply and is light. A flush door is stronger, takes knocks better and comes in waterproof BWP grades for wet areas.

Can moulded skin doors be painted?

Yes. Most come primer-coated for site painting. Use a good enamel or PU paint on both faces.

Can I get a panel look with a flush door?

Yes, with CNC-routed grooves, applied mouldings, or a laminated or veneered design on a solid-core flush door.

Are moulded doors good for main doors?

No. Main doors face sun, rain and security needs; use a 35 mm BWP flush door or a solid timber door.
