What Wood Costs for a Main Door Frame

A 7 × 3.5 ft main door frame (chaukhat) with a 5 × 2.5 in section uses about 1.5 cft of timber, or roughly 1.75 cft with cutting wastage. At our rates that is about:

Frame timberApprox. cost (1.75 cft)
Burma teak₹14,000–16,625
Sudan teak₹5,250–6,125
Ghana teak special₹4,900–5,250
Ghana teak₹3,850–4,200
Meranti₹2,275–2,625

Before GST and labour. A threshold (bottom member) adds a little more. A solid wood shutter needs several times the timber of the frame, depending on thickness and design.

Choosing Wood for Your Main Door

Exposed to rain or west sun: choose teak, preferably Burma or Sudan, and finish with an exterior PU or melamine polish. Covered porch or apartment corridor: Ghana teak, white ash or a veneered flush door all work well. Tight budget: a Ghana teak or meranti frame with a 35 mm BWP flush door. Always buy seasoned timber, seal all six faces of the shutter and fit a good lock and three or four heavy hinges.

Design Ideas

Teak veneer with grooves, a wide handle and a side panel is the current favourite for Ahmedabad apartments; carved teak remains popular for bungalows.
