Teak Wood Door Designs for Modern and Traditional Homes
Teak is the classic main door wood in India: it resists water, termites and sun, polishes to a deep glow and lasts generations. Today teak doors range from hand-carved traditional shutters to flat, grooved modern designs and teak-veneer flush doors. Here are the most popular teak door designs, which teak to choose, and what the timber costs in Ahmedabad.
Popular Teak Wood Door Designs
Carved traditional
Floral, temple or geometric carving on raised panels. The classic bungalow and haveli look; needs dense, even-grain teak.
Raised panel
Four or six raised panels in a frame. Timeless, and it hides seasonal wood movement better than a flat slab.
Modern grooved
A flat shutter with horizontal or vertical grooves and a long handle. The favourite for Ahmedabad apartments.
Teak with glass or metal inlay
Frosted glass strips or brass and steel inlays add light and a contemporary touch.
Double door
Two 2 ft leaves for a grand 4 ft entrance, often with matching side panels.
Pivot door
A wide, tall shutter that turns on a pivot for a dramatic modern entrance. Needs a very stable build.
Teak veneer flush door
The teak look on a stable 35 mm BWP flush door, at a fraction of the cost. See 35 mm BWP flush door.
Pooja and jaali doors
Teak frames with carved or CNC jaali panels for pooja rooms. See jali door designs.
What the Teak Costs for a Main Door Shutter
A 7 × 3.5 ft solid teak panel shutter uses roughly 4 cft of timber including cutting wastage. Rates per cft at our Lati Bazar store, GST extra.
| Teak | Per cft | Timber for one shutter (~4 cft) |
|---|---|---|
| Burma teak | ₹8,000–9,500 | ₹32,000–38,000 |
| Sudan teak | ₹3,000–3,500 | ₹12,000–14,000 |
| Ghana teak special | ₹2,800–3,000 | ₹11,200–12,000 |
| Ghana teak | ₹2,200–2,400 | ₹8,800–9,600 |
| Ivory Coast teak | ₹1,800–2,500 | ₹7,200–10,000 |
Carving, labour, polish and hardware are extra, and the frame needs about 1.75 cft more. A 7 × 3.5 ft, 35 mm BWP flush door finished in teak veneer or laminate costs about ₹3,724 for the door itself. Choosing Teak for Your Door
Burma teak has the finest grain, the most natural oil and the best reputation, at a premium price. Sudan and Ghana teak special give most of that durability and look for a fraction of the cost and are what most Ahmedabad homes choose. Ghana and Ivory Coast teak work well for frames and budget doors; pick the pieces yourself for even colour. Whatever you choose, insist on seasoned timber, because fresh wood shrinks and cracks after the door is hung.
Size and Thickness
Main door shutters are usually 7 × 3.5 ft, going up to 8 × 4 ft for tall entrances, and around 38–45 mm thick for solid teak. Double doors are commonly two 2 ft leaves. Standard sizes are in the door size chart, and single vs double in single door vs double door.
Finish and Care
Teak doors are finished with melamine, PU or natural oil. Exterior-grade PU lasts longest on doors facing sun or rain. Seal all six faces, including the top and bottom edges, before hanging. Re-polish every one to two years on exposed doors, and wipe with a dry cloth in between. Avoid harsh cleaners that strip the polish.
Solid Teak or Teak-Look Flush Door?
Solid teak gives real carving, weight and prestige. A teak-veneer or woodgrain-laminate 35 mm BWP flush door gives a flat or grooved teak look with more stability and much lower cost. Many homes combine a solid teak frame with a veneered flush shutter.
