About Meranti

Meranti (Red Meranti) is a reddish South-East Asian hardwood that works easily, holds screws well and takes polish beautifully. It is lighter and softer than teak, and priced well below it — which makes it a favourite for interior furniture, panelling, beading and framing where teak would be overkill.

The trade-off is durability: Meranti lacks teak's natural oils, so it is an interior timber, not one for wet areas or exposed outdoor frames. Where moisture or termites are a concern, step up to a teak such as Ivory Coast teak or Ghana teak. Where you simply need cheap, workable wood, pine is cheaper again but softer.

Stocked seasoned and cut to your plank, beam or furniture sizes at Lati Bazar.

What Meranti is used for

  • Interior furniture and cabinetry
  • Wall panelling and cladding
  • Beading, moulding and framing
  • Drawer sides and carcass work
  • Carving and decorative work

How We Supply Meranti

Timber is not sold like a plywood sheet — there is no standard 8×4. Every piece is cut to what the job needs and priced by volume. Three ways it leaves our Lati Bazar counter:

🚪 Door & Window Frames (Chaukhat)

Cut to your frame sections. Bring or WhatsApp your measurements and we quote against the exact requirement.

📏 Sawn Planks & Beams

Sold by cubic foot (ghan foot) for carpenters who cut down themselves — a range of thicknesses and lengths.

🪚 Furniture-Grade Cut Sizes

Pre-cut for furniture, carving and panelling — less wastage on site and less time at the saw.

Frequently Asked Questions

Red Meranti is approximately ₹1,300 – ₹1,500 per cubic foot (ghan foot) at Samta Plywood Centre — one of the most economical hardwoods we stock. WhatsApp 8460783619 for the exact rate.
Teak has natural oils that resist water, termites and warping; Meranti is a lighter, softer, cheaper hardwood without them. Meranti is great for interior furniture and panelling, but for wet areas or frames choose a teak like Ghana Teak.
For interior, dry-area frames it can be — but it will not match teak outdoors or in wet areas. For chaukhat that must last, Ivory Coast (CP) Teak or Ghana Teak are the safer choice.
