PVC Kitchen Cabinets: Pros, Cons, Real Cost and Designs

PVC kitchen cabinets are built from PVC foam board, a plastic sheet that cannot absorb water, rot or attract termites. For a kitchen that sees a leaking sink, daily mopping and humid monsoons, that is a big plus. But PVC is lighter than plywood, holds screws less firmly and does not like strong heat. Here is an honest look at PVC cabinets, Flexibond PVC board prices, and the board cost of a 10 ft kitchen in PVC: about ₹34,112 in PVC Gold at our Lati Bazar store.

What Are PVC Kitchen Cabinets?

PVC kitchen cabinets use PVC foam board (expanded polyvinyl chloride) for the carcass, shelves and sometimes the shutters. The board is cut, drilled and screwed like plywood, but it contains no wood, so water cannot make it swell. In India you will see three ways of using it:

Full PVC

PVC carcass and shutters

Completely waterproof. Best for wet, humid or termite-prone kitchens.

Hybrid

PVC base units, plywood above

PVC where water is (sink and base units), plywood for wall units. Our favourite value combination.

PVC shutters

Plywood carcass, PVC doors

A strong plywood body with waterproof shutters that never swell at the bottom edge.

Are PVC Cabinets Good for a Kitchen?

AdvantagesLimitations
Waterproof: no swelling under the sink or at the base from moppingLower load capacity: long shelves can sag under heavy steel utensils
Termite, borer and fungus proofWeaker screw holding: hinges and channels can loosen over time
Light; less load on walls and wall-unit fixingsHeat sensitive: keep a gap and heat shield near the hob and oven
Ready white surface; wipe clean, no polishPlain finish unless laminated; less rich than veneer
Easy to cut and installNon-biodegradable at end of life

How to Build PVC Kitchen Cabinets That Last

Thickness: 17–18 mm for the carcass and shutters, 11–12 mm for short shelves, 8 mm for backs. Use 24 mm Standard or add a support for shelves longer than about 2.5 ft. Screws: pre-drill, use coarse-thread screws and do not over-tighten; a hinge plate with four screws holds better than two. Heat: keep PVC away from direct flame; leave the gap the hob maker specifies, and use a heat-resistant side panel or fire retardant plywood next to the hob. Laminate: use an adhesive recommended for PVC. Load: put heavy steel utensils in plywood drawers or on well-supported shelves.

Who Should Choose PVC Cabinets?

PVC is ideal for kitchens with frequent leaks or a lot of water use, ground-floor and termite-prone homes, rental flats, utility and wash areas, and budget kitchens where waterproofing matters more than a premium finish. If your family cooks heavily with lots of steel utensils, a BWP plywood carcass with PVC only under the sink is the sturdier choice. Frequently Asked Questions

Are PVC kitchen cabinets good?

Yes, for wet, humid or termite-prone kitchens. PVC is fully waterproof and needs no maintenance. It is lighter than plywood and holds screws less firmly, so heavy drawers are better in plywood.

What is the cost of PVC kitchen cabinets?

At our Lati Bazar rates, the PVC Gold boards for a 10 ft straight kitchen cost about ₹34,112, and about ₹44,736 in PVC Standard. PVC base units with MR plywood wall units cost about ₹31,136. Hardware, countertop and labour extra, GST extra.

Which is better for a kitchen, PVC or plywood?

PVC is better where water is the main risk; BWP plywood is stronger for drawers, long shelves and heavy loads. A hybrid, with PVC base units and plywood above, gives most homes the best of both.

Is PVC safe near the gas stove?

PVC softens under strong heat. Keep the gap the hob maker specifies and use a heat-resistant or fire-retardant panel beside the hob.

Can laminate be applied on PVC board?

Yes. PVC board can be laminated with a suitable adhesive, giving the same designs as laminated plywood.

What thickness of PVC board is used for kitchen cabinets?

17 to 18 mm for the carcass and shutters, 11 to 12 mm for short shelves and 8 mm for backs. Use thicker board or add supports for long shelves.

How long do PVC kitchen cabinets last?

PVC does not rot or attract termites, so branded board lasts many years. Most problems come from loose hinges and sagging shelves, which correct thickness and fitting prevent.
