MDF vs Solid Wood: Which Is Better for Your Furniture?
MDF is an engineered board made from fine wood fibres pressed with resin: smooth, stable and affordable. Solid wood is timber cut straight from the log: strong, beautiful and long-lived, but costly and prone to moving with the seasons. They suit very different jobs. Here is how they compare, with Ahmedabad prices from our Lati Bazar store, and when plywood is the smarter middle path.
What is MDF?
Medium Density Fibreboard: wood fibres bonded with resin under heat and pressure into flat, even sheets. No grain, no knots, perfectly smooth. Comes in interior, moisture-resistant (HDHMR / HDMR), exterior and boiling-water grades. See MDF board and MDF grades.
What is solid wood?
Planks and sections sawn from logs such as teak, sheesham or ash. Real grain all the way through, can be carved and re-polished for generations, but moves with humidity. See our timber range and sheesham vs teak vs sal.
MDF vs Solid Wood Compared
| Factor | MDF | Solid wood |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Good in flat panels; weak at edges and screws | Very strong; holds screws and joints |
| Stability | Very stable; no grain, no warping | Can shrink, swell, warp or crack with humidity |
| Water | Interior grade swells if wet; HDHMR resists humidity | Good in teak; needs sealing |
| Termites | Treated grades resist | Teak resists; many woods need treatment |
| Finish | Best for paint, PU and CNC work | Best for natural polish and carving |
| Weight | Heavy for its size | Varies; teak is medium-heavy |
| Repair | Hard to repair once swollen or chipped | Sand, fill and re-polish |
| Lifespan | Many years in dry rooms | Generations with care |
| Cost | Low | High |
MDF vs Solid Wood Cost in Ahmedabad
MDF per sq ft at 18 mm; timber per cubic foot, and what that works out to for 1 sq ft of 18 mm thickness (before wastage and labour). GST extra.
| Material | Rate | Per sq ft at 18 mm |
|---|---|---|
| Action Tesa interior MDF | ₹61.60 / sq ft | ₹61.60 |
| Greenply interior MDF | ₹65.85 / sq ft | ₹65.85 |
| Action Tesa HDHMR | ₹106.87 / sq ft | ₹106.87 |
| Ghana teak | ₹2,200–2,400 / cft | ₹130–142 in timber |
| Sudan teak | ₹3,000–3,500 / cft | ₹177–207 in timber |
| Burma teak | ₹8,000–9,500 / cft | ₹472–561 in timber |
Solid wood also loses more in sawing, planing and jointing, and needs polish and more labour, so the real gap is wider than the table shows. Rates: Action Tesa MDF · Greenply interior MDF · timber price list.
When to Use MDF and When to Use Solid Wood
MDF
Painted and CNC work
PU-painted shutters, CNC jaali, fluted panels, wall panelling and decorative screens. See jali designs.
HDHMR
Humid-room shutters
Kitchen and bathroom shutters where a smooth painted or grooved finish is wanted. See HDHMR vs plywood.
Solid wood
Doors, frames, heirloom furniture
Main doors, door and window frames, carved beds, dining sets and chairs. See best wood for main door.
Plywood
The middle path
Wardrobes, kitchens and large units: stronger than MDF, more stable and far cheaper than solid wood. See plywood vs solid wood and MDF vs plywood (see also plywood vs MDF vs particle board).
MDF vs Solid Wood for Bathroom Cabinets
Bathrooms are the hardest test for both. Interior MDF swells quickly if water gets into an edge or screw hole, so avoid it near basins. HDHMR handles humidity much better and suits painted vanity shutters if every edge is sealed. Solid wood looks luxurious but can move and crack with daily steam unless it is teak and well sealed. For most bathroom vanities, marine BWP plywood with laminate is the most reliable carcass; see marine plywood for bathrooms and bathroom laminates.
Getting the Best From MDF
Use confirmat screws or minifix connectors rather than ordinary screws at edges, seal every cut edge with primer or edge band, keep interior grade in dry rooms, and choose HDHMR where humidity is a concern. For a sturdier carcass with an MDF look, many carpenters build in plywood and use MDF or HDHMR only for the painted shutters.
Getting the Best From Solid Wood
Buy seasoned timber, allow for movement in joints and panels, seal all faces including ends, and keep furniture out of direct sun and away from damp walls. Teak is the most forgiving species for Indian conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better, MDF or solid wood?
Solid wood is stronger, longer-lasting and repairable, so it suits doors, frames and heirloom furniture. MDF is cheaper, very stable and ideal for painted and CNC-cut work. For wardrobes and kitchens, plywood is usually better than both.
Is MDF cheaper than solid wood?
Much cheaper. At our store, 18 mm interior MDF is ₹61.60 to ₹65.85 per sq ft, while Ghana teak costs about ₹130 to ₹142 in timber alone for the same 18 mm thickness, before wastage and labour.
Does MDF last as long as solid wood?
In dry rooms, good MDF furniture lasts many years, but solid wood can last generations and can be sanded and re-polished. MDF is hard to repair once swollen or chipped.
Is MDF waterproof?
Interior MDF is not; it swells if water gets into edges. HDHMR and exterior or boiling-water MDF grades resist moisture much better, but every cut edge should still be sealed.
Is MDF good for bathroom cabinets?
Interior MDF is not. HDHMR works for painted vanity shutters if sealed. For the carcass, marine BWP plywood with laminate is the most reliable choice.
Why does solid wood crack or warp?
Solid wood takes in and releases moisture with the seasons, so it shrinks and swells. Using seasoned timber and sealing all faces reduces movement.
Is MDF good for painted furniture?
Yes. MDF has no grain, so it gives the smoothest base for PU and duco paint and for CNC-routed designs.
