Veneer vs Solid Wood: Which Is Better for Your Interiors?

Both give you real wood. Solid wood is timber all the way through: strong, carvable and heirloom-worthy, but costly, heavy and prone to moving with the seasons. Veneer is a thin slice of that same timber pasted onto a stable plywood or MDF base, so you get the grain and warmth at a fraction of the cost and with far less warping. Here is how they compare, what each really costs at our Lati Bazar store, and where each belongs.

What is veneer?

A thin face of natural wood such as teak, walnut or oak, sold as 4 mm sheets and pasted on plywood, MDF or a flush door and then polished. It looks and feels like solid wood on the surface, while the board underneath gives strength and stability. Natural and engineered (recon) types are available. See veneer sheets for interiors.

What is solid wood?

Planks and sections sawn directly from the log: teak, sheesham, sal, ash. The grain runs right through, so it can be carved, profiled and sanded again and again. But solid timber shrinks and swells with humidity and costs much more per sq ft. See our timber range.

Veneer vs Solid Wood Cost in Ahmedabad

What 1 sq ft of an 18 mm panel costs in each material at our Lati Bazar store, before labour and polish. GST extra.

MaterialPer sq ft at 18 mmNotes

Solid Burma teak (₹8,000–9,500 / cft)₹472–561 in timber alonePlaning, jointing and wastage extra

Solid timber also loses a lot in sawing and planing, and wide panels need jointing, so the real gap is bigger than the table shows. Rates: timber price list · plywood price list. The same comparison for other boards: engineered wood vs solid wood (see also eco-friendly plywood).

Where to Use Veneer and Where to Use Solid Wood

Veneer

Wardrobe shutters and wall panels

Large, flat, matched surfaces that would warp in solid wood.

Veneer

TV walls and headboards

Walnut or teak backdrops. See plywood for headboard.

Veneer

Interior doors

Veneered flush doors stay flat. See veneer door designs.

Solid wood

Door and window frames

Strength, screws and weather. See best wood for main door.

Solid wood

Carved main doors and mandirs

Carving needs timber all the way through. See teak wood door designs.

Solid wood

Chairs, legs and dining frames

Joinery and daily loads. Pair with veneered tops.

The Smart Mix Most Homes Use

Use solid teak for frames, legs and a carved main door, and veneer on plywood for wardrobes, panelling, TV units and interior doors. Use the same species and polish tone for both, and the room reads as solid wood throughout, at a much lower cost and with far less warping. For species choices, see sheesham vs teak vs sal and teak vs walnut veneer.

Caring for Each

Veneer: dust with a soft dry cloth, wipe spills quickly, keep out of strong direct sun, and re-polish lightly when the sheen fades. Avoid harsh cleaners. Solid wood: seal all faces including the ends, keep away from damp walls, and polish or oil every year or two. Both last decades with good polish.

Common Mistakes

Building large wardrobe shutters in solid wood (they warp); veneering only one face of a panel; using unseasoned timber for frames; and expecting veneer to survive deep scratches or heavy sanding. For a tougher finish with a wood look, compare veneer vs laminate (see also teak veneer).

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, veneer or solid wood?

Solid wood is better for frames, legs, carved doors and heirloom furniture. Veneer on plywood is better for large flat surfaces such as wardrobes, panelling and interior doors, because it is far more stable and costs much less.

Is veneer real wood?

Yes. Veneer is a thin face of natural wood, sold as 4 mm sheets with a plywood backing, pasted onto plywood or MDF. Engineered veneer is also made from real wood, re-formed for a uniform grain.

Is veneer cheaper than solid wood?

Much cheaper. At our store, 18 mm MR plywood is ₹74 per sq ft before veneer, while the timber alone for 1 sq ft of 18 mm Ghana teak is about ₹130 to ₹142, and Burma teak about ₹472 to ₹561, before wastage and labour.

Does veneer last as long as solid wood?

Veneer on good plywood lasts decades with proper polish. Solid wood can last generations and can be sanded and refinished many more times.

Can veneer be carved?

No. Veneer is too thin to carve. Use solid wood for carved doors, mandirs and mouldings.

Does veneer warp like solid wood?

Much less. The cross-laminated plywood base keeps veneered panels flat, which is why wardrobe shutters and wall panels are made in veneer rather than solid wood.

How do I maintain veneer furniture?

Dust with a soft dry cloth, wipe spills quickly, avoid harsh cleaners and strong sun, and re-polish lightly when needed.
